Off work today, so for a change I decided to go fishing. It was a beautiful sunny day, barely any wind. Started off at one of my spots on the Oldman, and caught a couple suckers and 2 20 inch sturgeon. First one jumped behind me, then wrapped around a big chunk of tree, so I thought it was a lot bigger than it turned out to be, but still a sturgeon! Had a deformed dorsal, it was curled up and hard so I decorated it for him.
Second was pretty cool, soon as it felt the hook it shot straight out of the river and cleared it by at least a foot.
If anyone hasnt caught a small sturgeon before, believe me they are sharp! Gloves are recommended, they cut you very easily. Just adds to the fun
Got slow so I moved down to the forks, and got a bite about the third spot I tried. Turned out to be a crazy strong 46 incher, took the bait on my lighter rod, and then tried to set my reel on fire, ran upstream, downstream, and sideways, then I finally managed to tail it at the boat.
Again a bite on the light rod, this time a bulldog who stayed at the bottom for most of the fight, took forever to get it up to the boat, but time well spent! my new personal best at 55 3/4 inches!
One more hit again on the little ugly stik, this time a 36 incher. Had one about that size jump beside me when I was fighting the biggest one, maybe it was just waiting its turn.
All in all an awesome day, total of 9 sturgeon the first week of the season, and 10 tagged.
Rivers are coming up fast, especially the OldMan its up maybe 2 or more feet from the last weekend. Lots of debris including a 30 foot long tree coming down so if you head out keep your eyes open.
dead Bullsnake on the road in.
