I was there this afternoon. Were you the fella by himself on the stool or did you have a tent?

Dont tip and artificial lure with bait...
when you dead sticked your bait it was in the wrong area of the water colom...
the bows should be within a foot below the ice so no slipshot is required. fish in the afternoon when the bugs become more active so do the trout feeding on them.use small circle hooks.

Not always, depending on the body of water, you can find some little lakes/ponds that hold fantastic tasting brook trout, within 1.5 hrs of most major cities in ab.

No, there were the two guys by the tent near you and I was the guy with the grey lumberjack jacket on next down to them. I spent two hours staring at holes and nothing. There was a young fella a little farther down from me there for an hour and he caught two. After he left I moved down to his holes and I hooked into one right away. Try down that way the next time.

I talked to 3 fellas that regularly fish the lake. Small pink jig with a chunk of shrimp with 6 to 8 feet of line until you hit the bottom and then raise the bait up about a foot. They did very well but they also had a slow period of time between 1 pm and 4 pm. Good luck!

Are you moving around at all? I believe you've got a power auger right? Just switching locations can help. I catch rainbows and brookies at all sorts of depths. Since you're allowed two lines, maybe drop a line just below the ice, and one a foot off the bottom just to cover more depths.

Good luck!

Hey man, whats up, well use maggots, they will work great if you are allowed to use them, set them at the bottom then 12-20 inches off the bottom, not touching bottom as you will grab weeds ext... jig slow and soft, sometimes double jigging in one pull, you should nail them, remember do not go right in the middle of chicakoo lake there is a spring there and it would be thin ice, go alone the shore line, not far out at all, infact take 30-40 small steps out from the shore then setup, you will hook into more brookies this way as well.

He's one of the three guys that I talked to so you already know what and how.....I told you where so if you put all three together you should have better luck. I've got a few things to do next week but if there's a good weather day I'll meet you out there and we'll give it a try. I don't like sitting inside a tent so a low wind +/-10 degree day would be best.

maybe not for the pure-istttt but

the power bait that looks like little maggots has worked for me
in the past. It kinda comes in a string . Looks like Maggots
jointed slightly together...

Pink worked well when everyone around me used maggots etc.

see you on the ice

Get yourself over 5-6 FOW...you can find this depth surprisingly close to shore. Drop a small jig with a piece of worm ~1" long threaded on to the shank. Susupend it a couple feet off the bottom. Use a *small* bobber, and watch it like a hawk. When I had been out there, for the most part the brookies were biting very light. The rainbows hit it harder. Wait for the bobber to start swimming around your hole, and then give the line a gentle pull (don't rip it out of their lips).

Then bonk the fish on the head, gut it, and toss it in the pan!

If that doesn't work, get out there and do some experimenting. If you try something for an hour and it doesn't work, try something else. You've got two lines, so it's easy to experiment with different baits, depths, and techniques. I've caught fish there this ice season on worms, maggots, and a couple different kinds of powerbait. Minnow heads should work as well.

I know it's a small lake, full of stocked fish, but we still can't hand them to you.

And how many people are actually going to eat those muddy tasting fish.

Really.

Dump on me as much as you want, but those fish are like eating garbage.

They are not as good as the trout I catch further out of the city, but they taste fine to me. Just smoked up a batch a little while ago, everyone who tried them thought they were great.
