Lots of great fish on the list, but if you are talking premier sportfish, it would have to be a fish that would fit in the followoing sentence:

"If you REALLY want to catch a great __________, Alberta is THE place, (or one of the best places) to go!"

I'm not sure some, including sturgeon, would fit. YOu can catch them here, but If I really want to fish for sturgeon in Canada wouldn't I be heading for the Fraser?

ya its nice to spend a couple thousand and go chase a 9 footer in the frazer once a year but it sure is nice to drive an hour and chase a 5 footer in your own back yard.

Got to be Bull Trout for me, as there are few of them left, they get big, they are heavily protected (can keep any), they are our provincial fish and they are in challenging and interesting places which makes them fun to catch.

my 0.02cents

Cheers,

True, but that doesn't sounds like a "premier" fishery

Cheers,
I've got to agree with this reasoning. Although I dont agree that there are few of them left.

On another note
I wouldn't make the golden trout AB's premier Sportfish, as they don't get very big, aren't caught by very many people, and aren't native, although being a native fish isn't really a criterion. They seem more like a novelty than anything.

Yes, but were not talking about BC, or all the other places in Canada with much better fishing.

I voted "other" for Rocky Mountain Whites and/or Burbot.

Whites are under rated, tastey, fight well, etc.
Burbot taste amazing and are just UGLY.

I'm with you on that one. RM whites are the primary fish I target.

Still trying to get one over 50cm.

Still trying to get a burb over 15lbs too, but am failing miserably so far. But it only takes one!

We can always have another poll and pit the winner against all the fish that were excluded this round.

I chose Pike because they are everywhere. More often than not they are willing to fight right up until they are let back into the water. I've had pike shot right out of the ice hole after slamming a yellow wire worm. Hardly anyone I've ever talked to not enjoyed a good fight from a pike.

Sturgeon have an awe inspiring reputation for being huge and fight well. For now it's a second place fish, but after going out on Dago's jet boat later this spring, I just might ended up choosing sturgeon as the premier fish without any regards.

Ya, I'm surprised sturgeon are trailing so far in the polls. I think if we were to redo this in a few years that they would place significantly higher.

Most people seem to want to fish for them but are lacking the opportunity.

They must be around. Someone told about some bass-turds he saw at Wolf Lake

Bee..

Now you went and done it. After all your huffing and puffing about this and than and you forgot the only real Alberta fish.
An Athabaskan Rainbow. Not those transplanted interlopers from California but a real raised in Alberta trout.
Doggone it boy, clean up your act.

Don
