The stocked ponds are producing well right now. They are taking spinners but primarily flies. In particular gold ribbed hare's ear nymphs (size 10). I must have had 25 strikes, five that got off and four that went for the frying pan. Can't think of a better place to go after visiting friends on coffee row.
You should consider supporting the initiative to reduce the limit for stocked ponds to 2 from 5. Consider the benefits of a delayed harvest and having trout available for the frying pan over the whole season rather than get fished out in the first month or so. I caveat this with understanding which lakes you refer to as some like Chain Lakes down south are stocked with so many that 5 a day is no problem.
To answer both questions ... I was fishing Cipperly's pond south of Olds. Cipperly's pond is not even close to a lake like Chain Lakes. They are small pot hole ponds that summer kill when the weather stays hot (usually in August) so the sooner the trout numbers are reduced the less waste there is. I have walked around Hiller's pond in mid-July and counted hundreds of dead stocked trout killed because of an algea bloom brought on by hot weather. Instead of decreasing the limit on these small ponds they should be increased to help prevent such waste.
I hear people say that lake is fished out. Let the truth be known it is next to impossible to fish out a lake. There is always something that lives for another day. That usually says that there is bigger fish and they are harder to catch.
The normal stocking will feed those mature fish. I prefer that the bigger are fatting up.
