Default Too Cold for Newbies?

For this Family Day Monday, I was planning on taking several families out ice fishing to Wabamun. Most of these people have never ice-fished before, so I'd pretty much be bringing equipment for them, and setting everything up.

However, I'm a little concerned about the weather, and if it would be too cold for the kiddies. Current forecast for Edmonton is a high of -17, with windchill of -24. However, we wouldn't reach that temp until the afternoon. The temp for the morning, which is when we'd be starting, is -26, plus wind chill.

Most people would not have tents, just sitting on buckets on the open ice.

I've taken several groups out in the past, but the temps were -5 to -10, never this cold, so I'm a little wary.

Any opinions? Do you think this would be too cold for them?

Brian

I think fishing without a tent in that morning cold would be a little much for your friends, especially the kids. Afternoon temps might not be that bad, especially if there’s not a lot of wind

If they're sitting outside on buckets in -25, it's far too cold. No question.

It depends if you want your friends to go ice fishing with you in the future...

I think it would be pretty cold for most people who aren't dedicated ice fishers.

sounds like a bad first experience if it was that cold on buckets.

i am fine sitting outside in -40 but i wear 1500 dollars in thermal gear.

Default just call it a fish kill

Every fish you catch will be blind by the time it gets released back in the water at those temp. Get your hand wet and see how long before it falls off.

**** that ****. You’d never catch me fishing in -25 without a tent. Call up some buddies. Borrow a couple tents. Heck I’ll lend you mine.
