Default Magnification preference when sighting in.

As the title says what is your preference when sighting in your rifle. I prefer 6 power.

Yes.

I shoot shot #1 at the LOWEST power....then Shot #2 at midrange power, and shot #3 at Maximum power.

If I do my part, all 3 shots had better be within .25" of my rifles normal grouping.

If not, something is not right.

I and a hunting buddy were shooting (sighting in) our rifles on Friday with fixed 6 and 4X scopes out to 550 yds. Magnification is over rated. Big time.

I like to use highest magnification I can. After doing so, put it on the lowest and see what I can get, cause that's what I have it set on while hunting.

I'm with the majority ... max preferred. But, the purpose for my zero also dictates to some extent. For game, I start at max and use the last shots at the "field" magnification I will be using. For applications requiring optimum accuracy, like gophers/paper, I stick with max only. Load development is always at max.

To shoot at over 500 yds. Do the math on that as an equivilant at 100.

What sort of math would you recommend? Anything over 1x such as with irons is "magnification" no matter the yardage.

Shoot irons if magnification is overrated.

I should wilfully my last statement by saying my preferred rifles have irons but I have killed animals in the past with scopes and likely will in the future .
My goto rifle has express sights however .

My problem is seeing the iron sights. If it doesn't have a glow in the dark bead on it I can't see it. I ended up putting a scope on my 45/70, just couldn't see the irons good enough and really hate shooting with glasses.
