Sure multiple opinions but my limited experience with both was night and day. The strike master broke on the first trip out. Really dislike the plastic handles. Ion been very reliable in limited use.

Sounds like you're comparing 1 and 1a of the battery powered augers. I've really enjoyed the Strikemaster in the two seasons I've had it. I wouldn't want to sell mine, then kick in another $200/$300 just to get it in neon green.
*Easy and secure collet setup
*Huge buttons easy to use with big mitts on
*Reliable, long lasting batteries

I’ve had a gen 1 ion with reverse and now the gen 2 in 10” I haven’t had any issues with either, whether it be any batteries, things breaking or blades. I don’t keep my batteries in the shack or anything either and no temp stops me from fishing so I think they’ve proven there reliability to me. At the end of the day you can’t go wrong with any of them I don’t think,it’s pretty much going to be the whole ford over Chevy over Dodge debate in the end. My only reason for going to ion was they were the first on the market to prove themselves many moons ago so that’s where my decision came from.

I picked up the strikemaster 10” 2 seasons ago. Love it, and haven’t had any issues as of yet.

ION's are *slightly* faster, still considerably lighter even if you spring for the Pro Lithium 40v Lite, and typically more expensive. They also don't have the tendency to hang up on the bottom of the hole the way SMs can. Beyond that, they are very comparable and both camps religiously support their units. I've used both and could live happily with either. I'm all about the weight though...
P.S. Would I sell my StrikeMaster 40V to get an ION G2, if I had one? Probably not. There are better things to spend money on.

strikemaster has too much touque when break through the ice which can damage the blades. and the auger bit made of steel build up ice fast when its cold. 10inch lazer blades cost almost 100$ from cabelas.

3 years and thousands of holes drilled with my 10" strikemaster and ZERO complaints. Blades are still as sharp as day 1 (well almost lol)....have yet to burn through a battery in 1 day (got the free second battery with mine).....and I'm not careful with it at all. It bounces around in my truck or my sled....it falls over....it sits outside for 2 weeks in -30. Not even really sure how one would go about wrecking one short of tossing out of a moving vehicle at highway speeds.
I've never used an ion....but I'm sure the same can be said.

No kidding. I'm the same. Bunch of SM whiners on this thread. Rarely do I get any torque on the SM 10 inch. Drilled over 40 holes today and not one hang up. I would chalk it up to "user error"

I have a Strikemaster 40...it's the first electric I've owned. This is my third season and I am happy with it. No complaints yet. I have dropped it or had it fall over several times and haven't broken anything. I was quite leery when I first got it. I bought it sight unseen and when it arrived and I saw the plastic handlebars I shuddered thinking they would be broken the first time it fell over or took a bounce but it's been tough. not that I abuse my gear. I keep it in a carry case at all times when travelling too. No reason to leave it loose in the back of the truck to get bounced and beat to death...the deciding factor for my purchase was simple...boxing day sale with a free spare battery included.

switched strikemaster to ion g2 .it was a tough decision to make. Drilled around 50holes on sylvan lake with 10'' g2 today . cut way smoother than strikemaster. the head unit doesn't waggle as much as strikemaster. the handle feels better too. and its veryligh. but strikemaster drill faster than g2.

My strike master gas unit was taller than the other units with out an extension when I bought it 20 years ago. Not sure if that is a issue or not. But looking at the pictures of them it appears it is still taller, than the Ion. I would not worry about plastic handles they are strong.

Only complaint I have with the Ion is blade durability....My Eskimo was no different(same company)
Southern Alberta.....wind,dust and chinooks make for alot of dirty ice.....which the Ion hates.

Second season with Strikemaster 40V and no complains so far. Amazing unit, drills fast, battery lasts forever and it is very easy to operate. Could be a bit lighter, but hey that's why we go to the gym
