Complete ban on firearms?
We all know a couple of the federal parties stand on the firearms issue. Hypothetically speaking, if the conseratives lost power and we were faced with a total ban on firearms in the next few years, how many would willingly turn over their guns? There was a very high percentage of Canadians that caved and ran out and registered their firearms when the registry was implemented, so how many of these owners would just as willingly turn them all in if required?

No I wouldn't give them up. I'd ship them south, and I'd be headed south right behind them.

I am sure that would be a very common situation. The insurance companies would be the people with the most to lose, when all the claims were filed. Of course the guns would be stored very securely, and the thieves would go to great extremes to steal the guns.

Well Fishbrain, great name BTW. I thought it was obvious. It's the law, I'd do my best to comply.
As for my first post. I've been on the interent since Al Gore invented it and never saw the rule that says a poster is only supposed to engage the OP.
I'll try to do better in the future. I apologize if I've offended you. It was not my intent. Hope this helps.

We would need our guns to defend our eastern boarder. Probably what is now known as the Manitoba boarder.

Try to get out more.
If the cons had wanted to get rid of the gun registry they would have brought it forward as a government bill. Private member's bills are never made law, they are just to keep the yokels back home under control, and to use against other parties to scare people.
You give government way to much credit. Take a more cynical view and it will all make sense.

Just because it's a law doesn't make it right. By passing laws that are fundamentally flawed, like C-68, you lose the respect of the people that you are expected to represent and serve. Loss of respect means fewer and fewer people will respect the laws and in turn fewer and fewer will follow them. Rightly so!
If they ban guns outright, I will lose all respect for government and the laws they create. 'Nuff said.

And how did you expect that to pass in a minority government situation? They've tried more than once and have been stopped by the opposition.

The reason they didn't do it that way was due to the parlimentary tradition of allowing a free (ie. not "whipped") vote on a private member's bill.
It would have passed too, if Iggy hadn't broken that tradition. It would have been defeated at the first reading if it was a standard government bill.

You're probably not that far off from reality! A coalition government with 90% of the seats east of the MB / ON border could have the potential to break up the country.

They can have all my registered guns if they want, except those that may be stolen suddenly. I would never as a responsible gun owner ever have a firearm in my possesion that wasn't registered, that's for sure, so they would certainly get all of them. *cough*
