Default Telus vs. Shaw - Internet only

Moving to a new place at the end of the month and we're going to need to get the internet hooked up. We don't watch a lot of TV so we decided to just get the internet right now, no cable, and no home phone, so no bundle deals.

I'm not a fan of either company, but which is the lesser evil?

I have had Shaw Extreme (?) in the past, but have never used Telus' service.

I know that Telus has been sending out letters to people downloading illegally warning them to stop. Threats of getting sued!

I haven't heard of anything from shaw as of yet.

If you download movies or music (illegally) beware!

if you are downloading movies and music from open sites like thepiratebay you are asking for trouble. get yourself a private tracker and you wont be getting any threat letters other than the call from your provider saying you are downloading and uploading a massive amount and are over your monthly limit for data transfer

Telus internet is the only Telus service that I run. I look at swtiching to Shaw, but for what I get and pay for, I am better off sticking with Telus.

Speed VS $$$ is best to go with Shaw!

It's LEGAL in Canada to download! You can't resell it or reproduce it!

Some people believe this because of the Americans laws.

THIS IS CANADA PEOPLE.. WE CAN DOWNLOAD CONTENT FOR FREE!
THIS IS WHY THEY PUT IN A CAP ON OUR INTERNET!
THERE FORE WE PAY MORE IF WE DOWNLOAD MORE!
COME ON PEOPLE!

I can't say as there is much, if any, difference in them except the price @ Telus is a bit cheaper for now, I am sure they will do like Shaw and keep raising the rate a bit at a time til it is the same as Shaw. Both have krappy cust service on the phone.

Depends what kind of deal you get, Telus gave me the best deal about 2 years ago and for speed vs $$$, shaw still cannot compare.

I have the 25Mbs service for about $28 per month. That is not an intro rate, just something that I worked out with them and the price has not gone up and they have no intent to raise it. Compare that with Shaw and it would be double that for the same service. I have had Telus internet for about 8 years now.

I think it is who you ask personally Telus has never done me wrong I had problems exactly once and I got new gear out of the deal. They call me every few years and upgrade my gear. The inlaws had trouble with thier shaw phone it took so long to fix they are on telus now.

But YMMV

But what are your actual UL and DL speeds?

I get a pretty steady 25 Mbps DL and 18 Mbps UL in central Calgary with Telus, and I know that I could upgrade my comp for better rates.

But wait, the new standard for wireless will support 500+ Mbps speeds no problems.

It also depends where you live. In some cases one will be faster than the other. Our town doesn't have the Telus fibre optic so all we get is 3mb/s and with Shaw I get 10x faster speed so Shaw is a no brainer. I always have good customer service with Shaw and with Telus I always seem to be talking with someone in Mumbai.

Needless to say we switched over to Shaw a year ago and won't go back to Telus. We were with them for 12 years and they never once offered to upgrade equipment or offer incentives for customer loyalty.

Had Shaw and had many problems switched to Telus .... it works fine but regret signing on with them. hate the TV package . I have come to the conclusion they both suck equally, for different reasons.

As far as telus internet goes. Not too much to complain about on my end. However, if they keep harrassing me on switching to their televison service, which I have chewed them out for time and time again that I am happy with my current provider and to leave me alone. I will switch everything, internet, cell phones to another source as they clearly are not getting the message. Rant over.

all telecom companies are scum, I've been paying for broadband 50 but the most i ever get is 25, sometimes 35. not to mention all the tv shows are complete trash. I was going to call again today and complain and cancel all this crap, i dont even watch the tv, but i didnt have time. you cant really get around paying out the ass if you want their services but just make sure you get the long end of the stick.

it really makes me sick how for 6 months ive been paying for 50 mbps and only getting 25, and i am computer literate and i knew the whole time, they kept telling me oh its a new service so its not up 100% yet blah blah , I am getting half of what i pay for, and i've had enough, but how many people out thier are getting ripped off and have no clue and never will.

is stealing from a store ok as long as nobody ever finds out?

I dislike there guide because they seem to have put a heck of a pile of porn channels right in the middle of the family channels. like you use the guide and then wam they have very discriptive titles that i don`t even wanna see .

Honestly I can't stand Telus "Optic" "ShmahpOptic" but the guide can be customized to lock out certain channels from showing up on the screen with Shaw I cannot.
