They sure were. Sows once becoming maternal come into heat every 2 years and will do so well into their 20's if they live that long.
It's good to be careful not to shoot sows but for spring hunting the realty is sows will be shot. Some come out of the den with last years Cubs and the Cubs get wandering early. Some sows have had enough and push them off earlier. Sometimes there is an early boar coming around that pushes the Cubs off and so on and so on. That's just the way it is. If you end up shooting one you do, so be it.
