Default 936 moose

Daughter had her orientation over the weekend and they say the moose population has increased 250%. We did a short hike Saturday and saw 3 cows. Good feeling for next weeks bow hunt.

No doubt there are lots of animals in there. It’s just a matter of finding them where you can get a shot off.

Thanks all. Last 3 years I’ve hunted in there, I’ve heard cows bellering early rifle season. I’ve put most of my efforts into deer and elk, and have some great blind locations. This will be a bit of a change up.

I have antlered elk this year.

Got the same info at the orientation...Seen a few moose tracks on the snowy mornings but haven’t seen a live one yet. Kinda surprised me but then I’m not looking for moose either.

Mark is right, damned difficult place to bowhunt with all that jungle. Much as I love the bow I can’t wait for Nov 1

I don't mean to derail your thread but didn't want to start up a new one for 936. When attending the orientation for WMU936 they advise that there are only 120 elk (including bulls) in total in Blackfoot. But they give out 150 anterless tags (43 more than previous year) and I believe 60 or 80 antlered tags. How the hell does this make any sense??? Then proceed to say that success rates range from 30-40%. So if 40% success... 230 elk hunters that harvest 92 animals leaving only 28 Elk in Blackfoot!? I know this level of success will never be achieved with so few elk numbers but even at 20% success rate... leaves only 74 animals. I thought the numbers were bad in there 4 years ago when they said there were 240 elk in there. Not surprising though as we did watch about 40 animals escape under the fence into Elk Island. So compare Blackfoot to Suffield (Approx. twice the acreage) Blackfoot 120, Suffield at it's peak 5000+. I know Suffield was a disaster with the overpopulation and the logistical issues of being a military base, but they waited until 5000+ animals to allow a hunt.

I would sure like to see this hunt put on hold for about 3-5 years and let the Elk numbers increase to a healthy and harvestable number. Or they could move some animals from Elk island where they are complaining there are too many elk. Then the hunt will actually serve it's purpose of game management and sustaining a healthy number of animals.

I dont apply for that draw, but I'm guessing that those numbers reflect the Biologists best estimate of anticipated success.

If they give out 150 antlerless tags and they expect that 20% will successfully harvest an animal, the population would be reduced by 30 animals.

Those elk in the park move back and forth
That fence only stops the buffalo

Since when are Biologists and F&W making good decisions for game in Alberta?? Zones that should be reduced are not, draw tags, givr, allocations are not reduced that I am aware of. Its disappointing.

No kidding I think this is the worst managed province in Canada for game management in my opinion

I don’t believe there are 120 elk in blackfoot. I think they may be counting 120, but there are more. I wouldn’t mind pausing the elk hunting there too, I doubt they are nearly eating themselves into starvation.

Aren’t trail cams illegal in 936?
