Default Hello From out this way

Just figured I'd say hello and introduce myself. I signed on because I am finding little luck in getting info on starting dogs on ducks. This is my first year for it all be it the rifles to the dog. My son has a keen interest in hunting and with no role models around for him to learn from I have done like any other good Mum, I got my PAL all sorted out and took the hunter's course. Bought a beautiful Browning Micro Midas .243 and the savage .17HMR for my son.

I really enjoy target so I challenged both my restricted and non-restricted and thinking about mounted shooting. I am pretty good and consistant at 75yards with the .17. The .243 will be another challenge for me. Just wish my PAL would hurry up and come so I can take both guns home.

Oh I am sure I will. I'm already anticipating opening up the laptop tonight and seeing what I can find on just starting a dog. Have a nice rottie/bullmastiff with maybe a smidgen of lab thrown in just by her interest in water and all birds be it in the bush or on the water.

Lots of chickens and deer!

Yes we do have lots of chicken and deer. Chicken is reason I was actually motivated to see if I can train the dog on birds. She is forever disapearing into the bush and bringing me back something with wings however she then wants to play keep away. Pretty sure its a game started with the kids but only good when its a toy or ball. Tomorrow we see if I can get herr to bring the ball back on command. Try with treats and work my way to just praise this weekend and see what happens. Wish I had a dock. Be interesting to see how well she is at dock diving. Seen it lots but never had a dog that showed so much potential and energy.

This forum was actually recommended when I came to him today asking for info on training dogs. few short months I have gone from barely able to butcher and gut my broilers to just straining at the bit to try actually hit a moving target. Would like to try bows eventually but like to bite life and it bit me back a while back so have a bad shoulder. Nice to see there are lots of ladies on here with the same idea.

First you will want to get a shotgun if you want to hit birds in flight. A 20 gauge mould be a good one.

That is an interesting breed of dog you are working with. Not the usual "bird dog" but if it is smart and you work at it there is a good chance you could get some success.

I know a fellow who uses a Jack Russell terrier when grouse hunting. The little dog has got it figured out that if it finds a grouse and trees it the master will come over and shoot it and then he can pick it up and be proud of his catch.

I always figure that an October grouse hunt is the best thing for a new hunter or a non-hunter. Taking a walk with a gun when the leaves are yellow and there is a nip in the air and a smell of fall is just FINE. If you shoot a grouse it is a bonus.
