Good luck.

Someone told me once that crows and prey birds are arch enemys. In fact I believe they use owl decoys to shoot crows in some states. Maybe try a crow decoy will have keep them at bay!

As a kid, I used to raise pheasants with help from a "Provincial" pheasant hatchery program's help. They supplied the chicks for free, on a commitment that the birds would be released.

It was requested that an open topped pen was used for the birds to "self-release" when strong enough to fly out.

Of course the local great-horned raptors loved the requested pen system.

Government Solution: (This was during King Klein's reign)

Get a bottle or jug of whiskey. Get a can of Silver paint. Drink all of the whiskey. Paint inside of empty bottle silver, thus creating a mirror effect with the glass. Wire the bottle securely to the highest point on the pen.

Result:

The mirrored glass Scare-Owl worked. The owls would beat themselves silly trying to knock off the bottle, and after a few evenings they got tired of getting beat up. leaving both the bottle and pheasants alone. Remember, Wire the bottle to the post securely!

Or just cover your chicken coop.

I had "something" killing chickens and there were always ravens feeing on them in the morning. I figured the ravens were killing them but not sure.

I strung bailer string back and forth across the top of the open pen and tired strips of flagging tape in different places along the twine. No more problems.

Obviously cover it up with wire, if the owl comes back for some more chickens its your own fault for not covering it up.

friend of mine covered his hens up with wire and the bugger of an owl landed and squeezed under some of the loose chainlink and got in and did some serious damage....when he found him in the morning he was so full of poultry he couldnt fly...so friend grabbed him and took him for a truck ride about 10km away.

that was last fall...said he hasnt seen him since but he also fixed his fence up.

i had money on the owl being back within a week.

an owl this time of year???

i tend to have very few problems this time of year. heck, i don't even see them!

what i have done is you take a shotgun shell and cut the top off to dump the shot out. once an owl gets pelted with a wad they dont like sticking around.

Have you tried a sign? I put this sign up last week and haven't seen any owls since. Actually I haven't seen much of anything, but i expect the swelling to go down this week at least on one eye.

easy, get rid of your owl and get a cat like everyone else! and if you covered your owl with chicken wire it would have to be called owl wire, and I dont think thats even legal

Default I don't have open pens

But never have owl problems this time of year they are on the nests and food is abundant (gophers). Only trouble here is December to February when snow is deep.

I have live trapped them and had a raptor rehab centre nearby when Ted Brauanwarth was alive and he banded them and released them in Carseland by river or up in K country or Banff when he was traveling. thought live trapped would just learn to not go in trap anymore but in 10 years I have never had one of his banded owls return. did live trap 3 yearlings with sequentially numbered bands from the same nest in 48 hours once though.

Heard from an oldtimer once that when they raised free range chickens once an owl showed up they would never leave. They made pole traps with a platform of plywood and a weakened muskrat trap on top. Owls always want to ambush from high point above prey so create a platform on a pole with muskrat trap. Wont break skin but will they be nasty trying to get them out.

I'll ask my Dad.
He helped his uncle get rid of one years ago....when he was a teen.

I think it involves a quart of whiskey and testing out a new rifle at about 2 in the AM and a hole through your well armed and bit jumpy from the war sniper uncles chimney.

Oh! And some...OOOOOHHHH Lordy!!! I set him off and am surely gonna die...runnin for cover... then staying kinda scarce for a piece...

You probably aren't far off... but it was in Bowden County.

I guess his uncle crashed through a window...rifle in hand wearing his Jed Clampet long johns... covered in soot and ready to carve another notch...

His buddy from the war was visiting and he came out the other window in a similar state....lol

Dad tells me he never saw anyone move that fast in his life.... until he gathered his wits and made tracks himself....lol

Guess you just shouldn't try to do some people any favours....

Almost forgot....

I talked to Dad and he said that it was great way to get rid of an owl .....especially if you avoid putting a round through the smoke stack but....you shouldn't do it if there is any chance someone like his uncle is at home.

Funny how Klein solutions always seemed to involve a bottle of whiskey...
