Default Bobcat

Bobcat are open in Fur Management Zone 6 from Dec. 1 to January 31 and Zone 8 Nov. 1 to Feb.28. All other Zones are closed. You must have either a Resident Trappers Licence or an RFMA to harvest Bobcat in Alberta.

They make a very pretty full mount.

Bobcat
A resident may, without a licence from November 1 - February 28, 2011, hunt (but not trap) bobcat in WMUs 102, 104, 106, 108, 112, 116, 118, 119 and in the portion of WMU 110 that lies east of highway 2 and south of highway 3. The use of dogs is prohibited. All kills must be registered at a Fish and Wildlife Division office.

FYI; Bobcat regs for Alberta taken from wildlife regs Its all over for this year.I dont know that there is alot more this year, but they are definately there..

Are you sure you are seeing Bobcats and not Lynx in WMU339?

Yeah in WMU339 I pretty much would bet my paycheck that they are Lynx.
Seems to be a lot more sightings of them the past few years.

That is brutal man, that really blows my mind,
I do not want to start some big stupid thing. I know its not my site so i have no pull but what gives?
Anyone i know would consider that extreme and totally unnecessary censorship.
Would donkey load be edited even though it means the exact same thing?
good thing i was not talking about a female k9

Why does it matter if he edited ass? Its his post and he can edit it if he wants(within a half hour). But really why does it matter to you?

For the sake of the lynx I hope they never do open a season further north, some people have poor wildlife indentification skills.

Bang, the reason your post was edited was due to inappropriate language. We have a lot of young kids hanging out on AO. This is a family site and everyone needs to remember this when posting.

Would you find it right for you 10 year old boy to come to the kitchen table and tell your wife, "Wow Mom, that's an ***load of macaroni you cooked."
OR
I don't think that if you were writing a magazine article, that you would say "We shot an ***load of ducks that day."

Sure talk like this maybe fine with the boy out hunting, or on the floor of the rig, but remember that this is a public site that people of all ages, sex, and race read.

Not to derail this thread, but why are lynx and bobcat mostly limited to trappers in this province? Why are cougar not classified the same?

I saw a bobcat, not a lynx, on the chin forestry road two weeks ago. Blew my mind. I believe it is illegal to shoot lynx? If so, your buddy better make sure he is sure about what he shot.

The reason being is MANAGMENT. The province greatly tries to control the cougar populations in Alberta. Too many cougars equals too many predators. When you have too many predators it does serious damage to our game populations.
Without hunters harvesting cougars, we would more than likely have too many of them. Trappers alone can't harvest enough to meet the Provinces quotas.
Even with the Province's current quotas the populations seem to be growing. This would also be the reason for a lot more cougar hunting opportunities in Alberta for 2011.

Saw a bobcat running across the road in the community of Canyon Meadows (Calgary) 2 weeks ago. It was a fair ways out of Fish creek...

Thanks for the explanation. But what about bobcat and lynx? Are their populations much less explosive than cougars. I would have thought that cougars have a slower reproduction rate/population growth rate, no? Just curious because I'd love to get my beagles out on a small cat trail, but obviously that is not possible. Someday down the road I want to get Walkers and do cougar hunting.

I am guessing in regards to lynx that their population #s are closely tied to the cyclical snowshoe hare population, so there are either lots or none present in a given area seson to season and the fact that lynx are (in my experience) very curious and easy to call and hunt.

Cougar are very quick moving, elusive, and very difficult to hunt without hounds.

Though the sheer number of threads in the fall of 09 on AO about members inadvertantly calling in cats while calling moose and elk in WMU's with high cougar densities/populations shoots holes in my above cougar comment.

I know that Bobcats are in the south and lynx in the north. I have called in Lynx. i have trapped them and shot them.

Imagine my surprise when I was cooking lunch on my tailgate in the Peace country and saw a Bobcat squat in front of the truck within 50 feet of me.

He finished his business and walked off. when he cleared the front of the truck I lipsqueaked and had his attention for a few minutes. Definitely a bobcat.
