It is some really nice land and the river runs through it. they have two small walking bridges that cross this small river. so I set up on the first one and put my foxpro out east of me and start playing coyote pup screams. After about 2 mins a beatiful coyote is coming in hard on the frozen river so bam drop him in his tracks with my robinson arms xcr .223 (my first kill with it). I then went down to check out my yote, I decided that I could prob do another set up so I start walking on some quad trails and notice what I assume to be a day old cougar track. We have had alot of snow lately in the past few days. So I decided to walk back to my truck and grab my iphone to take a pic of it, to show my dad and bro. So I come back to the second bridge (about 200 yards farther up the river then the first one I used). I put the fox pro out about 50 yards in front of me and I sit butt down on the bridge and use the railings on the bridge as a rest it is really steady. I start playing coyote pup screams on the foxpro and go with that for about 2 mins. I then start thinkin what the heck and goto the cougar sounds, I play the cougar whistle twice. I then play the cougar in heat twice.... I catch a fat head bob out of the trees and staring right at me about 100 yards through a alley in the spruce. He didnt move the entire time he watched me and all I could see was his head/neck.. But what a fat head on these cougars..I sat there looking at him down the tube of my robinson xcr knowing that I could have dropped him in his tracks... But knowing that the season was already over for a month... so I shut off the foxpro the entire time I was watching him... and after a few minutes he slinked off.... I am guessing that this animal was in the 100 to 120lb range and I have enclosed one of the tracks that I took a pic of with my iphone. the cartridge in the pic is a .223 rem that measures 2.15". for all you experts what size do you think this cougar was?????? i tried to take a pic of the cougar with my phone upto my scope but that didnt work....
if the gentleman who posted this, was not carrying a weapon,it would not be an issue. he identifies the track as cougar and several poster adamantly support his findings. even when given the "out" of it being a wolf track, it was not taken. he identifies it as being fresh, knot a week old. then chooses to call to a cat that he knew was in the area. perhaps he was just dreaming he was hunting...

great "story" by another mystery poster...

He's back pedaling now. Instead of admitting his error he is claiming that the OP broke a rule and he was trying to give him an "out" by saying it was a wolf track.

nice post though ...the love those cougars especially the ones in the bar;;
indeed, the case measurement would put the width of the track at apporx. 4.25"

Not sure how you measure tracks, but you lay that .223 round in the pad of this cats front print. Like we see in the the pic and it will measure between 2 1/8" and 2 2/8"

A wolf would clearly show four claws and have a flat back to it's pad. You can see the slight "w" in the back of the cats print. How the left and right toe pad don't sit level is another good way to tell.

COUGAR

WOLF

This is a no brainer Nait, I can't believe your questioning this.

Cougar
Any person who is the owner or occupant of privately owned land may at any time of the year, hunt (but not trap) cougar on such lands, without a licence. Hunting with dogs is prohibited under this authority. Under this authority, registration is required within one week of the kill and the skin and skull or the intact carcass must be turned in to a Fish and Wildlife District office to be retained by the Crown.

I guess I was wrong, you must be the owner or occupant.
My bad.
rumored changes to this years regs will allow the owner or occupant to retain the cat(s).

Cant ever remember seeing a wold track set up like that.

There is a handful of fully visible features on that track that show its clearly a cat. But you and a few others are getting hung up on the fact that 1 or 2 nails shown. Try and look past the nails and tell me one thing about that track that says its a wolf? You wont be able too...

I cant explain it any better, even put the pics up to back my point up. Guess some guys just cant get their heads around it.

I love the houndsmen that call cat from one poor pic, looks like a dirty dog track to the front where it leaves the snow but who cares! Need more pics, show me the one where it steps on a log or stump and I'm convinced

You may need more pics, or the tell tale sign of it walking down a log. Some guys don't.

I wish I could refrain from argueing with guys that have no idea what there talking about, but for some reason I cant? That is a CAT TRACK there is no two ways about it! Period! It doesnt look ANYTHING like a K-9 track, and if you cant see that then you have no business calling it. Always so many experts on here.

Yup, well aware of the changes.

Was just posting in a real time/in the present context.

Its odd that they have not granted this to people with access to private lands as well.

Maybe with the new changes.

can't laugh away the facts...the way i see it, the events described could be considered... hunting out of season, hunting lion with a 223 and using an electronic caller to hunt lion. JMHO

don't really see the issues of seeing a cougar while hunting yotes, but your the pro... you do have a picture of a cougar as your avatar.

i think you have officially broken the record for getting the most "SNAP OUT OF IT!!" smilies in one thread...
