Default Anyone ever hunted swan?

Not too popular maybe, but there must be some swan hunters out there. Are they tasty?

It's illegal in Alberta, but it is legal in some locations in North America.

They hunt them in much of the US and friends of mine told me if you shoot a white one it is for taxidermy (tough) and the grayish ones (birds of the year are good to eat).

Quite legal along the eastern seaboard. I have seen hunting shows about swans and it looks awesome! They come down like a 747.

No one in Canada will admit to that.

On a serious note you could go to jail for shooting them.

Well if you hunt anything that is illegal to hunt you could be in trouble, that goes without saying. I certainly wasn't suggesting that.

I know swan hunting is perfectly legal in certain areas, I just never knew of anyone who hunted them.

I remember a couple years ago we had a AO member claiming to shoot a 22 lb snow goose. Luckly he turned himself in before anyone else did.

I also know of a few other AO members who have legally hunted swans in the US.

I'm hoping that a hunt gets passed here in Ontario, because I know i'll be out chasing them.
There actually trying to get a crane hunt going also here, and as of right now its looking like we're getting a dove hunt this comming fall.

Just watched a swan hunt in Nevada on "The Fowl Life".

It was kind of cool. Them swans are HUGE.

May want to try that one day.

If the population can sustain a hunt and a hunt gets passed, why not.
The fields are white with them in the spring as 1000's of them migrate through the area and on top of that there not native to here.
There also known for killing off ducks and geese in there breeding areas if they intrude on them.

this year seen two stupids shooting flying swans.....
approached to them and asked if they know that they were shooting swans.....

"Yes, we know, but swans were flying far away, so why not to shoot?????" - that was their answer.....

So, what kind of swan is this and where did you bag him ? I think the down on them is supposed to be particularly well insulating, if you want to make your own sleeping bag, or clothing.

Seen a pile of them in Washington last year when I was down there for a hunt. According to my buddies there they are trying to open a season for them. I'd kill one they taste like goose.

Never had the opportunity to hunt them but I did get the opportunity to try one once. The meat was really good!
