Abraham Lake Ice?

Hey,

I'm planning on heading out to Abraham lake on Monday, just wondering if anyone knows what the ice is like or where I could find the ice reports?

That’s a dam controlled lake so I don’t think many people fish that lake in the winter

Fins look like Char family so probably a Laketrout though the resolution of your photo is not very good so can't be sure.

Also forgot to mention that you covered the tail which is important when comparing Bull trout (shallow forked) vs Lake trout (deeply forked).

Hard to tell 100% but it sure looks like a bull to me.

Yea, I'm not sure myself, it came out of Abraham.

Judging by the tail, I'd say Laker.

That looks like a Laker. Its harder to tell them apart at that age but make sure you look at the tail. Thats the biggest give away. Conservation officers will come and check the fish out on that lake, make sure you only have lakers.

Better yet, look at the dorsal fin. That's the easiest distinguishing feature to look at when differentiating Charr species. If it doesn't have any spots, it's a Bull. Even with you're slightly fuzzy picture, the dorsal fin appears to have spots.

For what it's worth Montana's "Bull Trout Identification Course" says some lake trout don't have dorsal fin spots. According to the course, they have "Light colored or no spots on dorsal fin". and hence why they stress the forked tail.

DORSAL FIN Without spots or
sometimes with light-colored oval
markings
