Default Merc Outboard

I have a 70 HP Mercury Outboard that when started, automatically goes to full rev, so much so, that I have to turn off immediately, any ideas what the problem may be?? Thanks Very Much!

not sure if this will help, but had the same symptoms on my '89 Mercury 115 2+2 engine, out on lake and all of a sudden revved like it was the space shuttle at take off, shut off, turned on, same thing, shut down, took to Perfection Marine, no longer in business as owner died, anyway they looked at it and told me a piece of plastic that was part of carburetor broke off, and i think got lodged in there holding it wide open, ie wide open throttle, sounds like same thing happened to your engine, wasnt a tough fix and at time 15 years ago was about a $200 fix, try looking on Walleyecentral.com, in the engine forum, a mercury mechanic will probably help you out there for free, and he'll know all the possible causes, good luck
