Few would go bear hunting with a 20ga but if that's all you had and a GB charged you'd be happy to have it. Not ideal but it did the job.

Default Hiker kills bear in Jasper

People like this have no business in the woods. It's been since 07 since I was in Jasper, but doesn't the National Parks have signs when you go into the park that firearms aren't allowed?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/new...f4d3bb1b&ei=48

Canadian Hiker Brings Shotgun to National Park, Shoots Black Bear Because He Was "Scared"

A Canadian man pled guilty on Wednesday to violating a federal hunting restriction in Jasper National Park, CBC News reports. The violation stems from an incident that took place in August 2022, when he brought a shotgun into the park and shot a black bear with it.

Serge Painchaud, a 42-year-old Edmonton resident, claimed in court that he didn’t know it was against the law to carry a firearm in a national park. He said he brought the shotgun along and decided to use it because he was “scared.”

Justice Rosanna Saccomani soundly rejected this defense and ordered Painchaud to pay a fine of $7,500, or roughly $5,640 USD, within a year. (The prosecuting attorney pushed for heftier fines and a two-year probation on owning firearms, but the court was lenient because Painchaud cooperated and had no criminal record.)

“[That] would apply to pretty much every single person in your situation,” Saccomani told Painchaud. “We’re all afraid of bears.”

Right up there with people thinking they can take a handgun hiking for bear defense.

I know two hunters that always carry short shotguns they call bear spray in parks. They say protecting their young families always comes ahead of some predatory bear in a park.

If they're that terrified of bears maybe they should find another place to
take their families besides parks.

Exactly! I have a healthy respect for bears and am prepared but I’m not so scared that I don’t go in the woods.

They are very experienced hunters raised in Northern Alberta and are not scared of bears. They prefer to be prepared with buckshot and slugs if a 'Predatory' bear deceides to threaten the life of their children.

“Ursaphobia” runs strong in many “outdoorsmen”

I wonder out loud how my dad survived the “horrors” of 6 years living in Jasper and being an avid angler?

X2, Assuming theres a predatory cougar or bear behind every tree and bragging about illegal carry is a recipe for disaster.

OMG! Let's form a posse, hunt him down and hang him. The horror of carrying a gun in a National Park and then using it. Some of you may want to write Justine and Singh right away.

I took my horse across the park boundary one time with my gun in it scraper. Even worse, I didn’t pay any park fee’s.

I got away with it that time, but I know I will burn at the gates of hell for my actions.

By the way, our national parks are not there for Canadians to use.

Better yet? Take a Benelli M4 into West Ed Mall. A lot more unpredictable than the terrible wilds of Alberta.

I dont think they're allowed there either but hey. Since we're all skeered of boogeybears...its ok.

So, maybe Calloway "Park" is more in their swing zone.

Predatory bear eh? What are the odds of that, somewhere around the odds of hitting the lotto 649… twice.Like someone else said, more likely to get n trouble in West Ed mall than the bush from a bear. Hell look at the sheer number of tourists in Yellowstone park and the number of bears in the GYE. Big shocker more people are hurt by elk and bison guess we should kill them all off as well. You know, all in the name of safety!

Umm ok

Really I have met so many “ not scared of bears experienced hunters “ that are clueless with bears. No lack of experienced outdoorsman I would never take bear advice from

Just because you live in areas with bears or spend time in the bush where bears live doesn’t mean you make wise decisions regarding bears

I had the entire family out on a trail ride when circumstances dictated I had to take a short cut back through the Park with a rifle in my scabbard, guess we'll both burn in Hell.

Having been shot and shot at twice I am much more leery about people with guns than wildlife. A lot of the guys I meet out there seem terrified just to be out there. not to mention the terrible gun safety issues I have witnessed on and off the range.

Know a guy that got charged and convicted in BNP-cost him a chunk of grief, money and his career (one heck of an outdoor writer).

He wasn't laughing when it all went down.

Wouldn't catch me on the C train, especially after dark, without a can of spray on my person.
