I’m on buffalo right now. 17” of soft ice. Auger cut through like butter. Takes 3 times as long to drill a hole at pigeon.

Higher saline in Buffalo contributes to that.

Default Lake Minnewanka ice report

Hi all,

I am planning to go to Lake Minnewanka soon. Has anybody been there recently and knows the ice conditions? (ice thickness, snow cover etc.)

Thank you,

Just a heads up was on South Buck again recently trying to access the lake through the north end campground and I'm not exactly sure what happened but appears something broke through close to the launch on the path between the reeds maybe 50 yards from the launch. It was frozen over already but didn't chance it with the truck and chose another access. Never measured what was on the main lake but I'd guess at least 20".

I think that derby ended years ago. And yeah, I was surprised by how terrible the ice was. Lots of air bubbles/pockets in areas too. I was a bit nervous... didn’t venture as far out as I normally would. Not sure if it’s better elsewhere on the lake.

That’s a bad spot. During the Derby years a few vehicles went through in front of the weigh shack. The ice all over the lake had 3 feet of ice but not there. Crawling Valley had 17” where I was today.

Most people driving on now that the ice is that thick? A few weekends back it was closer to 11-12” and only a handful of people were driving on.

Don’t know. We were at the North end, so walk in only. Ice looked pretty good.

Yes, BUT there's a picture on Instagram (5 days ago) of a vehicle fully submerged. Not sure of the location but we were out there around Christmas time and there was open water east & southeast of the main shack.

Hmmm, guess I won't be driving the south end then as all the thick ice is on the north end lol

I would think. Was over 20” a week ago. This cold must be adding ice fairly quickly with not a lot of snow cover.

Default Calculating ice thickness

https://www.columbiatribune.com/arti...tyle/302039958

If the cold air stays in place, the ice will grow thicker and thicker. But that top layer of ice insulates the heat from the bottom of the lake, so it is not a fast process.

Scientists have developed a formula for calculating how fast ice will freeze on a lake. Here’s how:

1. Calculate the average temperature of the day by adding low temperature and high temperature and dividing by 2. Use degrees Fahrenheit. Now subtract that average from 32 degrees, the temperature at which water freezes. You have now just calculated what they call “freezing degree days.”

Example: If the low temperature today was 24 degrees and the high was 30 degrees, the average temperature of the day was 27 degrees. Subtract that from 32, and you get 5 freezing degree days for this day.

2. Based on studies, once a thin layer of ice film forms on a lake, it will add 1 inch of ice for every 15 freezing degree days in a 24 hour period.

Example: If we had a day with 5 freezing degree days, you would use the formula 5/15 = .33. On this day you would add .33 inches of ice, or 1/3 of an inch. But remember, this is after the first layer of ice forms.

This shows how long it can take a lake to freeze, even after a cold day.

Be safe.....

I'm no Wabamun veteran/expert but from what I have heard over the years train tressels (east), inlet/embankment near Sundance (south), creek and bay near the sailing club (west).

Generally on any lake any creek/river inlet/outlet, narrows, and any point/reef where depth change is abrupt should also be avoided.

Quad or sled as opposed to a vehicle would add another level of safety. Hope that helps.
