Default My Vancouver Island bear hunt

I was able to hunt with some friends on Vancouver Island this spring for my 24th birthday. It was a great hunt with lots of bears and some awesome stalks! We seen close to 30 bears a day and did multiple stalks. My friends g/f took her first bear, she made an awesome 280yard shot and crumpled it! I never did find the type of bear I was after with the bow but had a blast either way. It was hard turning down a big bear because we couldnt get in bow range but I had a mission to collect with the bow.
We did some fishing and dug for mussles, I seen tons of eagles and black tail deer and cougars and wolves. I had never seen an ocean before so it was a real cool expeirence I cant wait to go back! And I was lucky enough to be invited back to hunt Northern BC next fall for caribou and goats!

I love hunting bears out there. I can't imagine a better bow hunt for Black Bear. If you are lucky enough to get good weather in the spring you can pull into an inlet with the boat at low tide, shut it off and sit and watch multiple bears come down to the shore and dig around. Carefully evaluate them until you find one you want and make your play.... awesome! I haven't done it for quite a while...... maybe next year.

Great pics! Love those Otters, they always seem so happy.

Cool stuff man!!!

I'd love to get out there for a black bear hunt, or at least one in central BC again.

Headed out for my goat at the end of August though, super excited about that!

im not 100%,but i think the largest black bears are from the island. and charlotte islands.

im from there and once when i was hunting when i was 17 we seen a monster black come from the bush ,walk accross the road 15' in front of us and not give us the slightest acknowledgement. i could be mistaken cause it was a long time ago and i was young, but im pretty sure it was a brute. the way it lumbered across or something.

thanx for the pics though and sharing

The body size of these bears isn't overly stunning but the skull they grow is very large very fast. I was told the Bears along the coast don't live as long because of all the shellfish they eat and often damage teeth to where they can no longer eat.

Awesome pictures BBO, that first bear is a beast.

Now that you know the island, it's tough to not be hooked into getting back out there every year. I am going on 20 years of at least one annual trip. Have not yet hunted out there though, these pics of yours are getting the ball rolling though!

Thanks for posting!

The hunting is truly something else! I have never witnessed so many bears in a day the first 20 minutes in camp I paddled across the bay and stalked up a on a young bear to 3 yards before he walked off in the trees!

And the fishing is great also! every time we dropped the hook down we caight a different fish!

Looks like you had a blast! That scenery makes me a bit homesick, though. Too bad about the not bagging a bear, but seems like you didn't let that make or break the trip. Thanks for sharing!
