Default Vehicle Purchase Outside AB — Tax

Figured many on AO have done this…

I’m looking at a few used vehicles outside of Alberta in other provinces.
I’ve read briefly online through wonderful government websites that once you register the out of province vehicle in AB, you can apply to have the tax you paid (over and above 5% GST) reimbursed.

Is this true?
Anyone have experience with this?

* I’m aware of out of province inspections, etc.

Thanks.

Correct. I have done this in the Yukon when buying out of Ontario. The difference over and above the 5% federal tax took about a month or so to be refunded by cheque.

I was at a car dealership in Saskatchewan and they just don’t charge you the extra tax if your an Alberta resident.

Easy process, just submit forms and bill of sale online?

You only pay the tax WHEN you register it... Why would you be registering the vehicle in another Province ?

You shouldn't have paid any tax beyond the GST, unless the vehicle was subject to the new Luxury Tax...

Was pleasantly surprised. Bought a boat/trailer with the trailer last registered in Sask. and then gifted to their kids in Calgary but was never registered in AB. Sask has a $5000 exemption for vehicles including boat trailers before provincial tax is payable. AB registry put through a transfer to my AB plate for the usual $28 transfer fee. Much more pleasant than dealing with a boat purchased in BC. It worked out much better to have two bills of sale - one for the boat and one for the trailer and would do this again.

I bought a new stock trailer from a dealer in SK.

They tried to charge me their PST.

I told them I wasn’t paying it as I was an Alberta resident.

They grumbled but it saved me over $1,200
