Tobin Lake
Hello:
Is there anyone out there that has fished "Tobin Lake" in Saskatchewan ? If so, what would be the best time to go and what lures would you suggest to use? Thanks in advance!

Tobin does have it all, big everything but...... You have to put the time in to find the holes. I hope u stumble onto one. Best time is mid march or late fall pike. End of june for good perch and walleye. If you dont know where you are going it can be very tough fishing.

walleye use big jucy fat head minnows not smelts cause they dont give off as much scent as minnows tipped off with a jig hook for a suttle presenattion or a big chartuse jig head and glow at night for pike its been summed up

ya for the pike yu wanna be using tip ups because its mid winter and there metaolsim is realy slow so you dont wanna be jigging for them little to no movement is best and presenatations near botton but not on the bottom for the pike

Either u find the fish on this lake or it will be a really long trip for u. In the last 4 years this lake has gone downhill in a big way. There are monsters in there though.

I would probably fish the river system there instead of the lake itself.

Going for walleye then. June will get you lots of fish , lake July early Aug losts of bigger fish and Oct for BIG fish. Bait rig and leech works year round , watch high water levels. If they are high and dirty , STAY HME.

I just talked to my buddy that fishes Tobin Lake every March . I sort of picked his brain and this is what I found out. They fish east of Tobin at a place called Petagen Bay ( spelling ) they usually go for 2 days. I remember seeing pics that one of them emailed me last March. The fish are monsters .... anywhere from 8 -30 lbs. ( jacks ) obviously. Justin told me they use the biggest smelts they can find 10-12 in. and they fish in 6 ft. of water on a tip up, using 50 lb. monofiliment line, no idea what the leader is. They have a slot limit, no idea what it is. I've been invited this yr. so I'll have some pics for everybody to droll over.

Tobin Lake is one of the best (if not number one) walleye fisheries in North America. It is not like typical Alberta fisheries though, you have to work for your fish at Tobin. Boat control is key, and seasonal movements, structure and their relationship to forage are critical here. The pike fishing is incredible too, and well worth putting in your time for quality fish.
If you want to fish Tobin, I really suggest chatting with Steve from Twin Marine. If you have never been there before and are going for a week or a bunch of days, hiring a guide to get a lay of the land will start you off on the right foot, and point you in the right direction for fish.
