Default Fish Finder Question... i Know, newbee question...

I my wife is set on getting me a fish finder for father's day... might be because of my success rate !!!

I have never own a FF before and need some advice, budget is below 600$. Is there anything to look for ?

I was looking at hummingbird 596 HD DI, is it over-kill ?

What are the alternative in this quality range ?

I plan on fishing lakes here in the Yukon, as soon as the ice is off ( can't wait !)

The 596HD DI is a great choice esp for the price. Comparable one from Lowrance would be the HDS5, which is a bit more but has a bit larger screen. Kokanee bought one of those so you can check with him how he likes it.

In Alberta because the lakes aren't very deep, even the most basic ones around 100-200 bucks will suffice.
Its when you get to deeper lakes or to the ocean you need a more powerful system so it can scan all the way to the bottom.

The higher the wattage/power the more sensitive it is to be able to pick up signals (objects, fish, etc.). So get the highest one you can afford.

Color or black/white is very straightforward. Color will cost more.
Screen size same thing. Bigger will cost more.

Haven't used a DI or SI in person but have seen them in action on youtube. Looks like great functions to have for sure.
I'd highly recommend TFH if you're buying expensive toys like these. They stand by their product. I also recommend you going there and ask them questions about it so you'll be satisfied with it.

Hope this helps!
