Unhappy Another Great One Wanders On...

Dr. Valerius Geist, 1938-2021, died last night. World leader on biology of mountain sheep. Controversial, outspoken, brilliant scientist. Retired from University of Calgary living in Port Alberni, BC on Vancouver Island.

Knew Val reasonably well.
Attended a few classes from him back in the day.
And did confer with him on and off over the years on management situations.
Was always open and friendly. As well as extremely gifted and intelligent all round.
A Mentor, and one I admired greatly.

I am deeply saddened by his passing.
He was a Great Man, and one our whole Community will miss dearly.

Rest In Peace Sir.
If anyone ever deserved that, you most certainly cut the mustard...

Sadly,
Matt

I heard him lecture once. A great wealth of knowledge on ungulates dies with him.
Good hunting up there Val.

RIP Dr.. VAL!
I dud nor know him well, he stayed at our place a few years back when our fish and game club brought him up to speak at an annual wild game supper and awards.
We spent quite a few hours talking single shot rifles and hunting
A truly great man ....

By miles the best lecturer/professor I had getting my degree at U of C. His classes were often way over capacity with people (not registered in his class) sitting on the stairs just to listen to his lecture. This was in a Science Theatre classroom that held 300+ students. RIP

A truly brilliant man whose expertise on ungulates was unparalleled. Rest In Peace.

Knew his family well, all through my life in Calgary. Dr. Geist was an extremely knowledgeable and smart man. I remember fishing with him and the family on the Reddeer river when I was very young, catching my first ever Goldeye. There were other trips as well, which I can recall fondly. He will be sadly missed.

Didn't know him very well but attended a few times when he was speaking or in a meeting, and when I ran in to him elsewhere a couple times he was a joy to visit with.

Condolences on a true gentleman's passing. For some interesting watches try youtube search in his name and also a thread on this site entitled " Grizzlies, Geist vs Suzuki- ". RIP.

Great guy. If our government had taken his expert advice on game farming we likely would have avoided CWD.

That's so sad. Rest in Peace, Dr. Val!

I always enjoyed reading his articles in AO and elsewhere. So much insight, driven by a passion for wildlife.

He will be missed!

Default Passing of Val Geist

I was Val's first graduate student, in 1969. He agreed to let me do my field work on Pronghorns during the winter so that I could finish my Master's degree
in one year rather than the normal two years. He was a great teacher and went on to publish many papers and books on ungulate behavior.
His publications will stand the tests of time for many decades to come.

Unhappy

Sad news Nog,

I heard Dr. Geist speak a couple of times at various conferences I attended.

I very educated man and a passionate speaker.

A huge loss to the outdoor community and to the wildlife management fraternity.

Some of you might recall that Geist was an early proponent of game farming. He was the go to guy when the Province was contemplating allowing the farming of elk deer etc.

Years later he flipped. Did a 180 and came out in opposition. By then it was too late.
