Alternate Pike Fishing Techniques.

I have only ever fished pike with a lure, either cast and retrieve or trolling from a boat.

I have heard people talking about using bait, is this with a bobber, or off the bottom?

What do you use for bait?

I like the idea of the chance for different species, I have yet to catch my first walleye even though CVR is supposed to be over run with walleye.

I do enjoy catching pike simply because of the size and potential for a monster, but would like to "punch the card" for whatever species I can find.

i've done the whole casting lures and bait for pike which is fun but the most exciting is catching them on the fly. i was fly fishing for lake whitefish and somehow the pike found my tiny #14 wire worm very appetizing and slammed it. so exciting. a float and smelt near weed beds work well.

I am dealing with some severe tennis elbow (waiting to see a specialist) so I would be pretty ineffective with a fly rod. I taught myself to cast left handed but the fly rod is not too easy. I have a pretty mean roll cast but not for the distances I would need for pike. Also my fly rod is not heavy enough for pike.

Nice idea but I won't be able to partake for a I would think at least a couple years.

Years ago used red and white floats with smelt cast out to weed line edge, worked well. Also used to catch pike while fishing for pickerel using pickerel rigs with minnow.

So answer is yes.

No worries, certainly not something I would advertise ... mainly because it sounds foolish to not be able to do something because of "tennis elbow" but I make due.

I just switched my reel handle to the other side and reel with my right and fight the fish with my left.

A slip bobber with a jig, tipped with a minnow,worm or leech, will catch you many walleye and pike off the dam at CVR. Place your bobber stop at around 20' and cast it out and retrieve until you find the 20 ' mark. Then re- cast just past that spot, the hook will be just off the bottom. Your elbow might get sore reeling in fish though !!!

I would look up British pike fishing techniques. The have both float and ledger techniques down.

Jig n minnow if your in a boat or if not use a slip bobber and get your jig within a foot of bottom youll get walleye n pike and maybe a big ol perch if they are where your fishin

Remote control boat, four feet of line, 5 of diamonds, tied off to the boat, go for a rip along the weed edges...good times

Has anyone ever tried one of these extreme pike rigs for pike? I know pickerel rigs are the devil with a lot of people on this forum but these look to be built a lot heavier, and if anyone has had experience with them what did you use for bait with the style of hooks that are supplied with them?

I used them in the past. They are must for Pike.
I always change those hooks to trebles and used smelts or minnows.
Make sure that those springs at the hook end are short and there is exposed 3-4 mm of wire. This wire should be bent away from main shaft after you baited and attached treble. It will open if you catch big fish.
I always attached weight using elastic band or two. If weight gets stuck in the rocks it will brake off easier.

x2 on the fly rod, 8 or 9wt, a decent reel, and a humongous streamer and it's like hooking into a rocket. Sight fishing is pretty fun too

Quick Strike Rig with herring or smelt, use small water balloon as float... works like a charm everytime.. good luck

Why a water balloon?

Water balloons make great adjustable light floats. no resistance when pulled down by a fish.

Pike on a fly is an amazing fishing experience. As well as fishing for them on poppers over weed beds, incredible action at this time of year!

Sometimes u need to have more than 6 feet from float to strike rig, pain in the ass to take off float when you have a big fish on. Water balloon u keep reeling and it pops and u can reel in all the way... use slip knot to attach balloon.

Watched some British guys on YouTube and will be trying some bobber fishing for pike tomorrow and see what happens.
