Default Favourite Restuarants - Longterm and Newer

I posted this on the tipping thread but thought it would make a real good list for finding new places to try that have been vetted by AO members.

There are some restaurants with GREAT food, there are other restaurants with good to great service. There are damn few with both. I like to try new restaurants because we like to eat out, and we are always looking to diversify the list of places we can go to regularly. However, out of every 20 we try maybe one gets added to the list, and food quality is the key determining factor. There are certain restaurants that we go to for one or two specific dishes they serve. A couple of good dishes does not mean all their food is great. there are also a fair number that have dropped off after being on the list for a period of time. Gong into a random restaurant and expecting a great experience overall just isn't the way it usually works out.

Tony's Pizza - been eating there for 50 years
Oriental Phoenix - Calgary - 25 years
Rea's Calgary - 25 years
Ceasar's Steak House Calgary - 40 years
Mountain Steak and Pizaa - Edson 35 years. The one in Whitecourt is pretty good too.

New Additions

Little Bee - Edmonton - 8 years
Out Of Bounds Restaurant - 3 years
Dim Sum Delight - Edmonton 10 years
Memphis Blues - 127 St - great Brisket and smoked wings 7 years
Royal Pizza - 127 st 160 Ave - 8 months
Basha Donair and Sharwma _St Albert by Costco - 2 months
Nello's St Albert 5 years
Atlantic Kitchen St Albert 3 years.

This isn't all of them but I cannot tell you how many places we tried in the meantime. Love to see everyone else's list like this, make finding new places way easier.

I missed Giuseppe's in the new category. Went there when they first opened a year ago, great food and service, go there regularly now. They also make very good Gluten free pasta and pizza. The owner is my Nephew in laws Uncle.

Also Franco's Steak and Pizza 50 St about 130 Ave. Been eating there since the late 70s.

Tri

If you like Chinese and Vietnamese, the place in Gibbons is very good. Nothing fancy but good Canadian style Asian Food. Most of the places further east I haven't been to in at least 5 years so no help unfortunately. The steak joint in Wainwright used to be great.

If you like Pad Thai, you should try Syphay in Edmonton. We went to the south location, food was excellent, good sized portions, decent price and friendly service. I would go again.

East Coast Bar And Grill is fairly new in Airdrie.
It is the closet to Nfld fish and chips that I have had.

The Sicilian. Saddleback road and 23aveish.

Montys pizza. Lewis estates boulevard and potter greens drive

Donna’s eatery. 215 st and yellowheadish

A new place I really enjoyed was the cheesecake cafe in spruce grove.

Rea’s in Calgary is good! Since Mike died it went downhill a bit, but I haven’t been there in over a year now so maybe things are back to where they were.

Cattle Baron is really good for steaks and prime rib too.

Try Vito's in Vegreville. Dave used to make really good meals, everything from a noon clubhouse to a very good steak for supper!

Sypahy is good, more of a Lao flair to it than Thai (owners are from Laos). Thai Valley Grill in Whitemud Crossing just south of there is very good. Huma on the northeast corner of Argyll and 99th has good authentic Mexican fare and desserts. La Boca Loca on 99th street and 39th ave has some pretty good South American food, El Fogon on 118th ave and around 80th street has good Venezuelan food.

Pretty much all of the Indian restaurants on 34th ave around 93rd street are good.

I also try to hit up The Wooden Shoe when I pass by Gull Lake.

I'm not one for eating out much but The Proper in Lloydminster has the best fish and chips that I have had in a while.

What about places in Red Deer? Any small authentic places?

Before covid we used to go to Shiso for all you can eat sushi for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. I think it was between 11am and 3pm. The oysters were to die for. And all you can eat!

Was at Vittos 3 months ago. Still excellent food and as been true for 25 years, highly variable service.

Was at Cattle Baron about 8 months ago. Nowhere near as good as it used to be, which is really too bad because the steak and prime rib used to be excellent.

Saratoga has made a great breakfast sine the 70s as has Ernies. Never ate anything but breakfast at either.

Coliseum Steak and Pizza on 118 ave and 80 st is still a great lunch spot.

Default In Calgary

You have to try Buon Giornos, was the first date with my wife 26+ yrs ago, just as good today.

For pizza, try Volos. Greek owner that crams his 'za with a ton of toppings

Parthenon for Greek food when the original owners ran the place.

In the day, Smugglers was great, never the same in the last 10 yrs.

Pretty good breakfast and lunch, it's been around forever. Tasty Tom's on Whyte Ave and 100th St has a great breakfast, the schnitzel and eggs is fantastic.

For the working-class on the East side of Calgary...

There's a breakfast / lunch cafe at 34 WRANGLER PLACE SE called The Filling Station.

Every time I find myself in or going thru Calgary.. I HAVE to stop at Cedars Deli for a donair.

So dang delicious.

They have employees there who have been there for YEARS too, at least 10+ years - which is impressive to me for a little diner cafe type place. I take it as a sign that the owners really value their employees and treat them well.

On 17th Ave & 36th St SW in Calgary is Chili Thai Club, it’s immediately next to the McDonalds. Love every curry I’ve had there & it’s the best coconut rice anywhere
