Bringing a firearm to Alaska

What is required, paperwork wise etc. to bring a firearm to Alaska from Alberta. The firearm is registered, owner has PAL, passport, clean record, etc. and will be hunting as a resident's guest. I'm not asking about the hunting regs, simply the requirements of getting the gun across the line. I'd prefer to hear from experience, not heresay...

I just filed my ATF a week ago and they said then that it would be minimum 6 weeks to process and that it was only getting longer with the fall rush so if the trip is soon get started right away and good luck.

Just to clear the air and so that you all don't get the wrong impression. I was asking for my friend and neighbour who can thread a needle with a John Deere but has no computer savy. Him and his dad have been invited by a local to a cabin in the Aleutian Islands, so as to the rules concerning being hosted, I have no idea. My out of province hunts are in the Yukon as I have a cousin in Whitehorse. This year, I've opted out due because I have drawn an antlered moose and could possibly draw a trophy antelope.

Update, buddy checked out the website that Sheep provided. There won't be enough time to get the paperwork in order. He's still going, but with a rod & reel instead.

Tell him to try - and explain nicely to the ATF people what is up. Friend of mine sent his in (faxed it IIRC) and they called him saying they needed a little extra info, so he faxed it and had his Form 6 same day.

In case it's of interest to anyone I've done some correspondence with both the Alaska department of public safety and the Alaska attorney general in regards to taking, and carrying, a handgun in Alaska:




Dear State of Alaska Department of Public Safety,

I am a Canadian citizen who lives in the province of Alberta. As an avid
hunter and backpacker I regularly carry a firearm while in the
backcountry for both small game hunting when in season and for general
wildlife protection.

I am visiting Alaska this summer and I know the process for temporarily
importing a firearm into the United States. I have an Alaskan small game
hunting permit and will have the required paperwork from the ATF.

My question is regarding open carry laws in your fine state. I have read
through what I believe to be the relevant State Statutes and it appears
to me that one can open carry so long as one is in legal possession of
the firearm. The firearm would be a long barreled .44 revolver and the
intent is to carry in the backcountry for general wildlife protection. I
have also heard however that only a U.S. citizen may open carry a
handgun in Alaska. As such I may only take my long barreled shotgun into
the backcountry.

I would greatly appreciate a reply clarifying this issue.

Thank you for your inquiry. After reviewing your question, I looked
through our relevant statutes as well and did not find anything
prohibiting you from carrying your handgun as described. You have
already mentioned you have complied with the Federal ATF requirements so
the only suggestion I have is to be familiar with our Misconduct
Involving Weapons Statutes (AS 11.61.190-.220).

The AG had a similar response although he emphasized I read the statutes regarding misconduct with a firearm.

I phoned the Alberta CFO and my LTATT that covers to any border crossing would cover me, even going through BC and the Yukon.

I got my last one in two weeks by faxing everything. It wouldn't hurt to try.
