salmon and sturgeon fishing in the Frazer River

Hey, the pinks are running now at the coast. There still is sockeye in the river but can't keep them now. The coho sould be entering the rivers. Then there is the springs which should be there NOW. Of course there is always the chum which I don't like to eat but love to fight on an 8wt fly rod.

With all those species heading up to spawn the sturgeon are very active eating all the dead salmon that are floating down.

Now comes the best part. Heading out next Wednesday for 4 days of fly fishing for salmon and a little sturgeon fishing as well. Can't wait. Should be a good time.

Been tying flies like crazy this week to get ready for the trip. Man I'm seeing pink these days.

Kingfisher, was looking at getting into fly fishing, and would be travelling to the coast for some fishing as well, and was wondering what weight of fly rod would you recomend??

I went pink fishing from sept 2 - 7 in vedder mouth.
5 wt is all you need. Pink fly with UV (~1.5") & sink tip is all you need. Just swing the fly and then retrieve *very* slowly. Once you figured it out where the fish are, you will out fish all spoon casters.

Will bring my camera for sure. I have some great buddies out there who are going to be taking me and a buddy out to some amazing holes. Should be a good time.

I would not use my 5wt in the Vedder. Yes if your only going to catch pinks then you'd be OK. But in the Vedder there is always the chance of catching a chum or a coho or even a spring. any of those three will make short work of a 5 wt. I use an 8 wt. just because if I do happen to hit a coho or a chum then I'll at least have a chance in landing them. If you do happen to catch a spring then you'd better have lots of backing on your reel and you'd better have some good skills as far as playing a large fish.

I have seen springs caught in the 50lb range in the Vedder. So there are some monsters in there.

I have been tying flies like crazy this week and will be tying all weekend. I will try to post a picture of some of the pink flies that I have. Also some of the coho flies.

If anyone is going down to the Lower Mainland and fishing the Vedder be very careful. DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR VEHICLE!!!!!. I can't emphasize it enough. There have been so many thefts along that river it isn't even funny. Be careful and be aware. Watch where you park. Every once in a while each of you should check it and make sure it's still in one piece.
