I bought this beauty 1895 in 40-72WCF this past Spring, and swore I would never sell it. But, I have something else that needs funding now. You know how how it goes!
The 40-72 is one of the original chamberings in the 1895 and the most difficult 1895 caliber to come across. And, this one is in really nice shape and completely original. Most you find - if you are lucky enough to fine one - have no finish left and very rough bores from black powder use. From what I was told, this gun stayed in one family since the day it was originally bought, until this last Spring, and though it belonged to the great grandfather, those remaining can only remember one box of ammo being bought for the gun. You can tell because the bore is shiny and minty. This gun would make an excellent shooter or collector. The barrel has well over 90% blue left, thinning in a few spots underneath, while the right side of the receiver has probably 50% dark blue, the rest turning plum, while the left side still has at least 80% or better nice blue left. Really nice. The bolt retains pretty much all its original dark blue. The wood finish pretty much all remains as well. Only things worth pointing out is one character scrape on the left side of forearm, and a very,. tiny nick in the front edge of the comb. The buttstock on this rifle has some really nice grain as well! A real beauty and very hard gun to find, especially in this condition. According to the Madis book, this gun was made in 1905. I have only seen one other 40-72 recently and that was on CGN, and it was $9,000, but it was VERY nice, and a flatside!!
Asking $1925 shipped for this rifle. You will not be disappointed and be hard pressed to find another like this. These pictures do not do this gun justice.
