Default Looking for da best yote caliber

Been using my old 30-06 and it may be overkill, I may try saving the hides so I need a smaller caliber, I am undecided between 243 and 22-250, From what I read the 22-250 wears out much faster but shoots better, The ol 243 is a tried and tested caliber. what would you choose? Also what scope to put on top?.

Thank you in advance.

Best all around? .223.
Forget the 243, and the 22/250 will tear them up pretty good at most ranges I have killed them at, if you want to save hides.
if not, 22/250, don;t worry about what you have heard about barrels on the 22/250, it'll still kill them well for years if you don't keep sooting groups with it!

^ Agree with Cat. You'll be able to save hides with the .22-250 if you use a light, frangible bullet, like the 50gr V-Max.

I bought a Tikka 223 in December, and have shot dogs from under 100 to 350 yards and all of the holes have been less than a inch across. My buddy shot one with his 22-250 and put about a 3 inch hole at 120 yards.

Default Best yote caliber

Looking for the best? Aren't we all. There is no magic caliber. 25-06 and 243 for straight killing, 17/204 for saving hides, 22 cals for in between.

Myself, I like a 22-250 with a big open hollow point. It makes it easier on hides.

There is no perfect round, some are hard on fur but put the yote down. Some are easier on fur but loose more coyotes. It's a balance.

Never thought of the 25-06 before, I already have a 30-06 so I don't need a dual purpose rifle, maybe I should go smaller ?

How is the 222,223,204?

My friend has a 17hmr is that big enough for a 300 yard shot?

i love my 22-250 but it does damage. 204 will drift the most. 243 is a legal deer gun as well. but the 223 is fun, cheap, readily available shells everywhere.

Default Coyote calibre

The 17HMR will kill clean at 100-200 yards but won't punch deep enough past 200. I shoot a 204 ruger and 32gr noslers and have killed cleanly out to 500 yards. Cheap to reload very accurate no recoil and deadly fast. I love my 204 for coyotes. Gophers are good practice for the 204 as well.

Maybe a change of bullets in the trusty ol 30-06 would do?

223 sounds like it's getting alot of votes.

As you can see there isn't one, it's a lot of personal preference, how you use it, etc. Don't think anyone can argue a .223 doesn't do the job and cheaply too.

I have a .223 myself, but used the 12gauge on one this year in backyard.

So what I'm trying to say is buy more then one.

Me, I like the 22-250. Hopefully it gets a workout this weekend.

.204 or the .17 rem without a doubt. If anyone says the .204 or .17 rem do not kill wit authority then they obviously have not hunted with one.

My main gun for yotes was a 25-06 with 85gr ballistic tips it shot extremely flat and accurate it was not as bad on hides as you think as long as it was in the ribs not to far back or forward they often didnt exit. In the gut or shoulder though and you had a mess but one thing was for sure there was a lot of forgiveness in your hits it flattened em very well. I shoot a 22-250 now with 45gr hollow points and it works very well also it kills very well and depending on shot placement is fairly fur frendly.

Default 223 gets my vote

All winter long I used 223 on yote and from 100 to 350 never damaged one hide to the point of no value. And I have a few of the Nikon coyote scopes floating around out there and guys seem to like them other than that 4200 elite with the DOA reticle is my scope of choice.

My last coyote gun was a 22-250 and the new one is too . Thought of a 223 and I believe they are a good choice , but my Dad shoots a 222 and the thought of mixing up the shells isn't an option .

.243 does the job...only one dog that had a hole too big to stitch...and I was just shooting 90 gr soft point all winter. Accumulating some brass for reloading something lighter some day...

I'd go with the [u][b]243 & a 3x9 scope which you can use for deer etc. There would be less wind-drift. A 204 is too fast & you could stick a football in the exit hole. Go with the 243 & practice sewing & you'll get just as much for your coyote hide !!!!!

Have you ever shot anything with the 204. And trust me 243 rips them up

I have several calibers I've used for killing dogs, 243, 223, 22HP (savage), 204, 17hmr, 22wmr. I've killed at least one yote with each of these calibers, my favorite is the .22 savage high-power but hard to find ammo if you don't reload. After that I'd go to my 204, fantastic round, more wind drift compared to a 22-250 but recoil is nil and definitely good choice for the range your looking for. The 223 is also a good choice, easy to find cheap ammo, if you shoot AR's you should have a steady supply of ammo on hand. My overall vote goes to the 204 but that's just my $0.02
Cheers
