Trip Report: Nova Scotia! (Pic HEAVY)
First off, I'd like to thank my friend AlbertaDiver for pioneering this thread format. It's alot of work to wade through all the pics, but after having the pleasure of seeing so many shared for so long, it's worth the effort.
With that being said, please bear with me. There's alot of pics from my home province and alot of stories. I'm going to try and group them in categories, and hopefully showcase a little slice of heaven.
Let's start with the 'ol homestead shall we? Originally constructed over 200 years ago. My father is a retired master carpenter who has spent the past 30 years making this house a home.
This is the view from the backyard. There's an Atlantic Salmon stream at the back end of that field beyond the vegetable garden that I cut my teeth on, shot my first deer and run a trapline. So many good memories.......
Will you come along for the ride?

I'm the oldest child of five. Three of us are scattered over hell's half acre and the other two remain home. It was the first time in six long years we have all been together at once.
Although it was only a 2 day overlap.......a bit of fun was had by all.
My youngest brother and his GF are the only members of the family without children. Wasn't alot of the room growing up in the house with just us kids, let alone spouses and grandkids on top of it all. Thus, they decided to remain with their outdoorsmen ways and camp it out on the front lawn with their rescue dog named, "Penny". If you've watched Big Bang Theory you may get a slight grasp on the degree we tortured that pooch.
There's a good story to follow!

Crap!
Just realized that I lost a wack of pics in the PB upload process that'll screw up the timeline of things. Looks like yer gonna have to wait a bit for the rest of the story.
As an apology, here's a tale for a laugh.
My brother that was camping out with his GF and pooch in the tent complained about a terrible night's sleep one morning. Apparently a wild barn cat jumped on the top of their tent at 4am and the dog lost it''s mind. Gave me an idea.
The next night, with enough beers in the belly......... said c@ck ^^^ just so happened to find it's way into a certain tent with a certain couple and a certain dog at an unGodly hour.
The only way to describe the events to follow would be........ WOW!

^^^ Yep!
Here's a few more in the 'General' category.
Summery would be that I took the 'Shrubs' down to a fish hatchery for an outing, followed by a trip to a somewhat isolated beach.
Managed to get Mom's car buried to the axles in sand following old tracks. The kids passed a family right of passage by helping push out a stuck car with Mom at the wheel while Dad screamed, "Straighten out the wheels!!!"
BTW........you didn't just see them do that. lol

Last post of the night.
Did an outing to Pictou. Took the Shrubs to see the Hector replica which brought the first group of Scottish settlers across. Pretty cool to see first hand the confineded quarters below deck for the three month voyage.
This was followed by a visit to the museum of industry in New Glascow, mere yards away from the site of the Westray mine disaster.
Although a bit of a somber outing, getting to know one's heritage is always worthwhile.
Missing a few pics from PB. Stay tuned........

Beautiful pics Tree, especially the Hector. My family landed in Pictou in the 1700's on that ship and settled in Cape Breton.....just shipped them all out of Calgary after a two week visit, but that was with WestJet.
Which harbor is that in the early pictures?

Glad ya like 'em folks. Lots more to come.
K., yeah, the Hector was very cool. Seeing the cramped quarters below deck pretty much sent a shiver up my spine. The bunks were tiny and stacked four high. Would have been a helluva crossing, that's for sure! Oh yeah, that first harbor is Ballantyne's Cove. Lotta lobster and tuna come in there.
So while in Pictou, there was another must see. The Grohmann Knife factory. Unfortunately, we hadn't planned ahead and couldn't tour the factor on a Sunday, but still a cool place. My ten year old son passed a wee right a passage and became the proud owner of his very first knife. The funny part is that Mrs Tree is the first person the slice themselves with it. Oh the language.......

What's a trip to the coast without a beach day?
The weather was perfect and the waters were warm. In fact the warmest in recent memories and there's lot's of concern about hurricane season as the conditions are optimal for a repeat of Juan.
Man did we have a blast though! There were literally thousands of little hermit crabs running around and are they ever comical buggers. Sorta look like that robot Johnny 5 from the movie Short Circut.
The also have bit of a nasty disposition and will fight each other. So naturally I had to catch a bunch of 'em and toss them in a kid's wheelbarrow for a WWF Battle Royal! The poor periwinkles didn't know what to think! LOL

Here's a good laugh.
Please click on the pic to see the short video. Crabs that nasty haven't been witnessed since Lefty-Canuck slammed Jenna Jameson.

looks like the invasive green crabs are taking over.
nice to see you enjoyed your vacation. I was back east this summer as well. Spent lots of time in NB and travelled to Maine and PEI as well. Although the maritime lobstermen are complaining about the glut of cheap softshell Maine lobster, I was pretty happy to indulge in it. Wife and kids also went to NS since we lived there for a couple years and made some friends there but I missed that part of the vacation as they drove out before me (I cheated and flew, then drove home to AB with them). We put almost 15000 kms on the Sienna this vacation!

I'm from Port Hawkesbury/Mainland and really like the pics. Perhaps you could put names to the beaches, bays and other fine landscapes. Great job!

Hi Sushi. Sounds like a heck of an adventure for sure. I did hear something about the green crabs and do believe that was one.
Hi Boxer. I'll try and name drop where I can remember. lol You'll like the last pics in this series.
Ok, time for a little fishing.
We piled a bunch of the kids in the back of the farm truck and had Mrs Tree chauffeur us on a grand adventure across hayfields and a dicey mudhole down to a pretty special place for me. It was the section of stream below the house where I caught my first ever fish on a fly..... a beautiful 12lb salmon well over 25 years ago now. Where does the time go?
Anyway, kids being kids, fishing turned to frolic and a great evening was had by all.
The other pics are from the Canso Causeway, connecting the mainland to Cape Breton. The mackeral were in so we headed down to try our hand. There were about 20 or so whales there a couple of days before but not that evening unfortunately. Still lots of fun though.

Thanks for the pictures TG.
I did not see a single sea gull in those pictures. Did you bring your magpie traps with you?
The Grohmann factory pictures were also great. I still own the little Russell sheath knife from when I was 11.
Three months on the Hector. Those settlers were a tough lot.
I am glad you children got to meet their family. That is important stuff.
That rooster looks like a real um pervert.
Thanks again.

Well there was a bit of an 'incident' in Halifax that I managed to talk my way out of. Not going to say to much about it, but there was beer involved and there's a clue in the pics to follow.
Time for some boats. These are shots from a little bit of everywhere. Enjoy.

Two different boats. Didn't meet the owner of the first one, but the guy with the second one was a bit of a grumpy chap if I recall correctly.

I haven't the foggiest of what you speak......
Ok, I got a bit of a reprieve and do not have to head out of town again until tomorrow, so I'll try and wrap this up.
We grew up a few short miles away from Riverside International Speedway. It's been refurbished in the past few years and has become one of Canada's top motorsports venues.
We got tix to an anticipated event and thought we'd get the Shrubs into the spirit of things with a trip to the go karts first.
I had known in advance that he'd be big enough to drive his own rig but played the 'maybe not' card to torture him for the two days previous. Ya wanna talk about an excited kid when they gave him the nod? LOL
Once he got the hang of it and realized he was strong enough to hold it through the corners the race was on!
My daughter rode with me doing her best Marvin the Martian imitation in an oversized helmet and we had a blast!
Boyo was a natural. Passing adults at will with an advantageous power to weight ratio. Impressive actually.
Gave him some grief by the end of the day. Rubbbins racin' boys! A little bump and run was fun and we even put each other in the wall a few times until getting kicked out. Couple little grannies there thought I was the biggest a-hole ever but the laughter told a different tale. lol
It was then onto the speedway for a great evening's entertainment. Riverside is a highbanked one-third mile track modeled on the legendary Bristol of NASCAR fame. These boys were hitting 110mph and put on a heck of a good show. If you haven't been to a track event, check it out. You will not be disappointed!
