Default Hasse Lake

I was on mywildalberta.com looking at the fish stocking report and I see that SRD are stocking everything in Hasse lake . They put in 20 spot tail shiners, 9 pike, 1280 yellow perch and 19 800 walleye.

I kind of chuckled at those numbers.....but it looks like its one step at a time....with that many walleye going in.....what are they supposed to eat? each other?

I looked at the stocking report as well..

Those are some wacky numbers. 20 spottail shiners? Seems to me those would become dinner before they even had a chance to reproduce. Looks like there trying to start a walleye fishery in Hasse..
Crazy.

What? and ruin a great trout fishery.

It sounds like whatever they had left in the tanks they dumped into Hasse. Maybe it should be renamed Bottom of the Barrel Lake.

I didn't check as I won't be fishing there but this has to be a joke right?

it does sound like they have given up on trout and are going for wallies. what the heck is a spottail shiner and why only 20? i predict that in 2 years all that will be in hasse is stunted perch and sticklebacks.

I never would have thought they would put walleye in there. The sign at the lake by the launch said pike and perch. I have not seen the reports so I cant say its not true. Is Hassy not prone to winterkill???? Im my opinion the walleye would be better off being pike feed in Wabamun. When did they put them in?

Those numbers really don't seem right...I'm aware that they stocked it with pike and perch...but what are walleye doing in the mix in that little puddle of a lake?

Great, if you thought that little dock was crowded when it was a trout fishery, look out now... If they were smart, they wouldn't let anyone keep anything outta there for a couple years if they do that. I like that lake, and area, very nice out there, except the hoards of gulls. Should be interesting either way.

The 20,000 walleye can share the 20 spottails .......... makes perfect sense to me.

After all with 20,000 walleye on a 10 acre lake that's only 2000 walleye per acre.

Seems like a fantastic plan to me .....lol

Sounds to me, if this info is true, they dumped the remaining walleye, probably fingerling stock, in there just to avoid having to overwinter the stock (and the mortality).

wow - this is really wierd. I guess the Alberta government is now part of the bucket brigade. They were, at one time, thinking of poisoning the lake to reestablish the trout population. Now they are stocking pike, perch and walleye. So very strange...

Cant wait to see how many " new Canadians" and others will be trying to keep them. There wont be any walleye around long with the shore fishing. Hope the CO's watch that lake like a hawk.

"new Canadians"...."old Canadians"

Some will claim ignorance and some will claim entitlement.....in the end all that I can say is I am not holding my breath that this lake will recover into what they are trying to create.

My thoughts exactly. There are enough other lakes within a similar drive from the city that I doubt I'll be bothering going to Hasse anyway.

Lakes gone to the birds, kinda a dump now, and fish are needed to eat all the seagull poop. Any fish in there is a good idea.

I don`t, if the lake is meat fishery thats fine with me, place is gross and anyone eating those fish, enjoy it. I fished there for many years and this summer after being dive bombed by seagulls who have turned that lake into a toilet then who cares.

The walleye might actually benefit the perch population by not letting them get out of hand too fast. The walleye will feed on the perch fry and therefore the perch won't get stunted. It will also give fisherman an alternative species to target so the perch don't get fished out in the first few years. I'm really interested in seeing how this unfolds; there is lots of interesting research out there on species to species relationships.
However, I would have preferred they installed aeration and restored Hasse to the fantastic trout fishery it once was.

Has anyone thought that it might be a mis-print and thought of calling the area biologist to find out?

Perhaps....but 9 pike, 20 spot-tail shiners....seems like an odd number to begin with in an ENTIRE lake.

If the shiners get split up they will die from being too lonely....lol

i heard that around 13cm is where walleye start to cannibalize each other so they cant really stock anything bigger.

I don't know if the pike were kept smaller then the walleye at a scale of say put in 5 walleye to 1 jack, walleye being 25 inches. So throw in 50 25 inch ranged walleyed to a 12-13 inch jack 10 and 2 adittional jacks capable of eating the large walleye. All the rest fingerlings
Those shiners would still have a
I dunno depending on the size of jacks put in statistically the odds of a shiner are 1 in 1,116
Chances of making it to first spawn. And with any luck they are able to find each other outside of the mass of walleye schooling around. The 2 big pike will be feeding on the large walleye the large walleye and smaller jack are feeding on the small perch and walleyes, and if they get lucky a shiner..
A recipe for a balanced lake? Or a recipe for disaster.
With Albertas fish conservation laws and regulations.
We,d see all grown walleye, all other species finglings..
Haha just kidding
