Default What to Get the Divorce Kids for Christmas

Earlier this year my uncle got a nasty surprise from his wife. The kind that sucks money and lasts a few years

Anyway his oldest is my god daughter and she's about 15 right now. I think her sisters are 11ish and maybe 5. I'm not close with them because they live in Newfoundland but I always bring them Christmas presents.

My presents don't suck generally but things are so god awful for them right now (my gd is seeing a shrink) that I feel like spoiling them. Thinking maybe a $100 gift card for each of them to Ardene, Toys R' Us, or whatever their age dictates.

Any yays or nays on that?

My daughter and niece(12 and 13), love gift cards. Ardene's especially. You can add to the list for your niece a pre paid phone card so she can call and talk if she needs it.

Tough one and good for you being so thoughtful. Yeah, spoil them, maybe things like taking them out when you go there. Anywhere they like a couple or few times. Waterslide, movies, etc.. Somewhere special. Anything to try to get their minds off it if you can for a while. Good luck.

Thanks guys

I'm thinking Ardene for the middle child and Toys R' Us for the young one but does anyone know if 15 yr olds still like Ardene? Is that the age where they try to be more adult?

I swear this was easier when I could just buy her a tea set

A girl only needs so many tea sets from her "cool" uncle.

Does she have an Ipod?

Yes, but that's a good train of thought.

I give cash all year long, feeding them, clothing them, transporting them, and generally putting up with their BS. I figure they should give me cash at Christmas....but yeah, I usually end up giving them what they want. I'm such a damn sucker.

Ordering online has been a god send.

Think all us non shoppers should be able to encourage the shoppers to do our shopping - with our budget for us.

Still trying to talk a shopper into it.

Sounds like OP got some good solid answers.

Phone the kids. Ask them what the want from uncle for christmas. Make the kids know that there is still family and your a very important part of their family, even though your in Alberta. The girls will understand and think you are more than "classic cool".

Make sure the kids can phone you at any time. A little card will ensure that.

Uncles and Aunts are very important in the children's changes in family matters.

Gift cards are good. Being a friend when they need to talk is a good idea as well, from personal experience, kids going through divorce do not tell their shrinks everything and it lingers for a long, long time having a family member they can trust is invaluable. IMO. cheers

Default kids

Good on ya for doing the extra. It does mean a lot to the kids to not be forgotten.
We have done mall gift cards and the kids like them. We have bought Chinook and Southcentre gift cards and the kids can use them at any of the stores in the mall, that way they are not committed to any one particular store.
My girls are 12 and 15 and they like that they can shop different stores and even go tot he food court when they're hungry with the cards. My older daughter is really into taking pictures with a quality point and shoot. She has a real knack for it and she has a lot fun with it.
