Thumbs up Wolf set up looks promising this year // Wolf Down// Looks like 2 Down… Same shot.

After failing for the last 4 winters I bought a gps & started figuring out on Google Earth where I was gonna try & set up. It took 6 tries to get there but finally made it. Learned a few hard lessons along the way but I guess that’s part of the adventure. It’d be cool to see some pics of other wolf set ups if you guys got any to share.

Good luck on the wolves fellas…

I wouldn’t take too many notes just yet David… lol . I doubt they’ll sniff me up there on my perch. It’s about 35 meters above the river & 300yds to the bait. Slope dope makes it about 252 yds. I can already picture ’em coming in from 900yds. Geez I hope this it happens this year

It’s a rubicon KBF. The tracks are TJD Xgen. The size that’s on there is for a side by side. Close to a foot longer on the back ones witch allows for more flotation & traction for climbing. Got ’em from Mike Whaley out of Nanaimo at atv track kit. I’m just so impressed by these tracks. Over 1700 km’s on ’em so far with no issues what so ever... it's like having a small tank. Won’t be going anywhere fast but definitely going.

Here’s another pic of the quad.

Gonna dress warm & send down a 150 grain bst from my Tikka 270 short mag. I highly doubt they’ll even make it to the grub. Anything within 400 yds’ll be toasted right away. Not playing around with these guys… They’re just too hard to get.

Lets see some pics for other set ups guys.

Default Bait

If you talk to local fish n wildlife they might let you take road kill. It woke the best.

Are you hunting WMU 356? If so, I could give you some areas to hunt, since I have shot my fair share. Just PM me, Thanks

Im hunting WMU 519 just outside the Fort McMurray city limits on the south side. I would say like you bhp that roadkill would work best. Had my eye open since it got cold back in October for a dead moose but nothing yet. Talk to the guys over at Carillion too but its hit & miss…mostly miss. Been running bait sickles with no luck. Wolves come in for a look on their way through & just wonder off. There isn’t much scent I don’t think. Saw a documentary on wolverines here in Alberta & the trappers were saying that beavers keep their stink appeal when frozen so that might be something to think about. Grind one or two up & kinda mix it in with the rest. Lots of guys have really good results with bait sickles down south though…Lots of guys.

Wish I was a wolf hunter and had something to add to your thread Popcan, but for now I'll have to sit back and enjoy your pictures as always.
Thanks for posting and good luck!

Looks like a great set up. When you set a bait do you set it in the ice? I have heard thats a good way to it?

It’s definitely the best set up I’ve had for wolves so far but like always its the location that makes or breaks a hunt. There isn’t a whole lot of resident wolves in the immediate area. 3 or 4 thats it & its a big area. This spot is convenient in the winter months with almost no travelling involved. Didn’t use any water or anchor for my bait at all. It’s just fresh meat frozen together with a tarp underneath so when it’s over I just fold the corners up into a sac & drag it away if theres even anything left. There’s been one fresh set of wolf track on the river since it’s been out there but another fella killed a moose legally about 2 miles up river the same day I set up so until that’s cleaned up it’ll be quiet I’m guessing. There’s lots of time left yet so It’ll come down to timing. Probably would have better chances with the Foxpro but I’m trying to film it so really don't wan’t them charging in or with their guard up. This is going to be an ambush in every sense of the word

A few more pics.

If I get one I’ll post pictures of it.

Funny you say just outside fort mcmurary city limits.

I was up there for a work meeting yesterday and driving from the airport I saw 4 on the side road. 2 grey, 1 black, 1 white/grey.

They were huge wolves too. Looks like you are in the right area.

This was about 9am in the morning.

good luck

Go figure... I think theres already one of our members in that area. Sent a pm but got no response from him. I don't want to invade anyones territory or step on anyones toes so I'll stay put for now... That area you saw them in is what we would call target rich. Must have been a rush seeing that no doubt.

I know a few guys that wolf hunt pretty seriously. They use road kill and the wolves seem to prefer deer over moose (and everything else) in their area. They don't use anything to freeze or anchor the bait to the ground and the key is to leave the baits as undisturbed as possible. In fact they only go in to the bait site itself if they have to replace the bait.
Good luck with your set up and hopefully soon you will have some pics to post.

I've used a set up close to this before. If you can run the river for miles in either direction from your bait beat a nice trail down and the wolves will follow it. Dragging a somewhat ripe beaver down the trail will help as well. If you can find some road kill cut the moose or deer into quarters with your axe. Drill a 8 inch hole with your auger in the river ice and stand the quarter up by placing the hoof and leg down in the water. Once it freezes the wolves can't drag it away and they can see it from a mile out.
Another thing we did was bring in frozen wolf urine from another area and throw it in the snow around the bait. The ravens will break it apart and it looks natural quite quickly. If you can't find wolf urine regular old dog urine is fine. If the wolves think they have competition they will hit the bait more frequently

Good luck
