Cant tell what type of duck
I was at the farm on the weekend and saw a pair of ducks, one with a young black duckling on its back while swimming.. I tried to identify the duck but only came up with a musk duck (and they are mainly found in Australia). I didn't get a pic of this but took some serious heckling for seeing a duck carrying a duckling. Both adult ducks appeared to be brown and I didn't note any differences between the two adults. Any insight would be appreciated

coots or grebes
My guess would be coot based on black and they commonly carry young. ducks never seen young on their backs.

coots are a black duck and the two adults looked like the same as a female mallard in colour, so I ruled coots out.

Loons have black chicks and they carry them on their backs. Also grebes carry young on their backs.

It wasn't a loon either, they were ducks of some kind and that's what has me baffled.

Not sure if it will help but it might get you somewhat closer to an answer.

The Gadwall duck is the closest to what I saw but the web site didn't say anything about its young being black or that they get carried piggyback style. That is the strangest duck ive seen on the lake.

Both brown? Brown ducks maybe?

this thread might be as much fun as the "identify this track" thread in trapping section.

I appreciate the fact that people are trying to help me out without a pic. I have never seen a duck carry a single chick/duckling on its back before. Mock me if you will but I had a legitimate query about this duck and who better to answer a question on ducks than those who frequent this forum. My description was accurate and my answer was found. I bet even a few people are now educated on the Gadwall Duck that had no idea it existed prior to this discussion.

How about Pied-billed Grebes? Both adults are mottled brown (but small), and they have been known to carry their mostly black young on their backs.

I know the grebe is a viable answer but it has a thin neck and pointy bill. I am familiar with grebes and I wasnt convinced that they were grebes.

Black duck perhaps, I believe its a subspecies of the Common Mallard found more in the east.

More of a Daffy Duck than a Donald Duck as Daffy is a black duck.

you mentioned a lake
Fish ducks often frequent lakes and I don't normally associate them with puddle ducks when someone says ducks. The merganzers have spear type bills but also partially black ducklings that ride on mom.
Could have been common or hooded merganzers especially on a lake.
