Default I'm new

Hello. I'm new to hunting and to this message board. I live in south-eastern Alberta. I am wondering what caliber rifle would be a good one for me. I plan to hunt mostly deer but might try to get moose and elk sometime. I was thinking of getting a 300 win mag but I don't know what the recoil would be like.
The hardest kicking gun I've shot with was a 12 gauge shotgun with 2and 3 quarter inh shells with no 6 shot. Thanks

K need more info. Age, size is really important in pickin gun out for yourself, but since your huntin such a wide variety of animals i would suggest a 30.06 has good recoil, lots of different bullet types, styles, grain and cheap too.But then again also depends on your age and size too.

Welcome to the board.

If I had to pick one cartrage, for the hunting you would do, and for the area you live...I would buy myself a 7mm Rem Mag.
The recoil is moderate, and the balistics will do you well in the flatter country. It does well on moose and is considered Old fathfull for some Elk hunters. Finding amo might be alittle daunting in some smaller places, you might find it but the selection would not be there. When you buy one, if you so decide, I would offer you these tips...buy a few selections of rounds and see what fires the best for you...and buy enough of the best one, that you won't have to worry about needing any for a while... SHOOT LOTS, and when you think you know what your gun will do at everyrange,,,shoot more!

Spending large money on a rifle might be better spent buying the best scope you can aford!

Welcome to the board boys, glad to have ya.

All of the calibers suggested are good (with maybe the exception of the .270 if you are looking to also go after moose or elk). Stick with the 7mm or a .308 is a good choice.

If you are concerned about recoil, take a hard look at the .280 Rem. Very similar ballistics to the 7mm with considerably less recoil.

I am also new to the board, and this is my first reply. All I can
say is that Ive been shooting a 7mm since 1979, and the gun
has never let me down.In the mountains to the prairies I have
taken moose, elk, bear, mule and whitetail deer plus antelope
with no worries as to how well the gun would perform.

Always Rember Bullet Placement Is Key

Good Luck

Default Short Action

I would look at the efficient fronteer with respect to recoil vs powder.

7mm-08, 308, 270 WSM, 300 WSM

I'm glad you can join us...welcome my friend.

The 308 or the 30-06 well do the job. Well take down any legal big game Alberta has to offer.
