Default Coyote hunting

Is there a restriction on caliber of rifle you can use to hunt coyote/wolf ? I cannot find anything in the regs or am I overlooking it ? At this time I only have a 30 06 and a 303...

No, there is no caliber restriction in Alberta.

Scott is correct but when shooting a yote on crown land it is illegal to let the fur be wasted if you are in the Green Area so with that in mind, blasting big holes thru a yote with a 30-06 may not be the best idea. On private land you are good to go.

I don't believe "wasted" is defined however. Nowhere does it say the pelt has to be sold to a commercial operation. If you want to make a few fur ornaments to hang from your rearview mirror, I don't see how that wouldn't legally qualify.

JohninAB,

I've been looking through the regs about that and couldn't find it for the life of me. Could you please indicate at which page I would be able to read that.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

For coyotes you should use bullets that don't mushroom up much.
(I learnt the hard way. I blew a 8by8 inch hole in my coyote this year)

What Caliber were you using and how close was the coyote to you?

If you want to use your 30-06 you can get some.30-06 55 grain accelerator bullets they are over 4000 FPS.

From what I can remember from back in the 70's and 80's, the accelerators were horrible for accuracy. Don't know what they're like now. Concept was great and if the accuracy would have been there, the 30-06 would be very popular with the varminters.
