Default Elk Photos - Missouri River Breaks

Took these photos yesterday... There is a "no hunting" zone that is about 2 square miles or so...not a large area, but the elk know they're safe there...amazing how they figure those things out.

And last, but not least............

I've photographed a lot of wildlife, but had never caught one "in the act" until yesterday!!!

My son and a friend were down there hunting... After I left the "No Hunting" zone I stopped to glass for some deer along the road... As I was scanning the willows I spotted a small group of elk... and then a monster bull stepped out.. So, here I am with no permit, etc. and my son is hunting somewhere 5 miles away! I drove to where he was camped and waited for him and told him where I'd see the elk. I'm sure they didn't move during the night, so I'm waiting to hear how his morning hunt went....

People have tried and people have failed. This is a federal game range (CMR wildlife refuge). Hunting is allowed everywhere except for this two mile "No Hunting" zone. There are federal employees who are there pretty much 24/7.. Several years (talking about 35 years ago I guess) I was hunting there and a guy shot a big bull with his bow and it ran in to the "No Hunting" zone and dropped dead no more than 10 yards over the fence (it's just a 3 strand barbwire fence). He went to the feds office and told them what had happened and asked if he could retrieve his elk and they would not allow it... They confiscated his elk. He got a lawyer and took them to court and won his case.. They had donated the meat by the time the case was settled, but he did get his antlers back...cost him a ton of money though...

They got in on the bull and the cows (there were about 15) right at daybreak., but as the elk were closing the distance something let out a screech/growl type of noise... The elk spooked and didn't look back... Sounds like a mountain lion from what they describe. They said they were downwind from the elk and the elk were very content until whatever it was scared the hell out of them.... Jake said they were coming right to him and he was sure he would get a shot... they were less than 100 yards away when they bolted out of there (they were bowhunting).... That's hunting...
