Default Common Sense

Got this in an e-mail the other day, probably been around for awhile but first time I have seen it.

An Obituary printed in the Times........ Interesting and sadly rather true

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I've seen different versions of this.

The part that sticks in most PC people's craw is the latter.

People are too friendly with their children. They have forgotten how to be an authority figure. Tears hurt them too much. Kids do better with boundaries; even if they are upset that they don't get what they want they feel safer when someone else is in charge and don't have too much power.

The schools have really taken a flight from reality. My wife, for example, told the school she was upset at the lack of an educational plan for my mildly autistic son for the next year. Their response; to file a report with Child Protective Services that she was too distraught for the kids to be safe with her. When they called me to tell me to get my kids from school, I instructed them to send the kids home with her and I'd meet them there. Their response; to file a report with Child Protective Services that I was willing to entrust the kids to an unsafe mother. And a more conscientous wife and mother you won't find.

That is my understanding as to why the Protestant Reformation happened in the first place; the corruption of the Church, the sale of "indulgences", etc. I am not a Christian so I could be wrong on this one.

Too true. Criminals would be less likely to offend if they knew they could be in mortal combat with a decent, violated pillar of the community. Someone like that knows that he's been burglarized or attacked. That kind of person is much scarier than any judge.

That's apocryphal. What happened was that her case was allowed to go to jury. That itself may motivate a settlement. It's the insurer's fault for not being willing more often to take these degenerate plaintiffs to trial and see their case implode in front of 6-12 people with common sense.

Our office was hit with a baseless suit and our insurer settled out from under us even though I was doing most of the legal legwork defending it, as the insurer's lawyer frankly was not up to the job.

In my country at least Common Sense is not dead and presidents like our current one either learn that fast or become one-termers like Carter.

By the way, I'm an extremely liberal Democrat, and have problems with the fact that my fellow liberals don't see the need to communicate with the majority of the people.
