Nope.

National or provincial parks (except wildland provincial parks) is a no-go.

Here's some more discussion...

I've done that hike. Great views!

This is a popular hike and is fairly well travelled. If you're really worried about Grizzlies, go in a group of 3 or more and take bear spray and make noise. You'll be fine.

Even in Wildland Parks it's illegal to carry a firearm while hiking. While hunting under the authority of a valid licence, yes, but just hiking, no!

Yes I cannot wait to try it, Im going to work my way down the list on the main page of that link. And like I said, some take you 30km or more into the bush. Figured I couldnt carry a shotgun but asked just to make sure.

Take an air horn ... just as loud as a gun.

Default Sulpher Skyline

BigBow, I hiked that particular trail last summer. I plan to do it again this year. One of the best things I have ever done. Even had a rainbow below us at the top. I am looking for another trail that would be as stunning but I havent found one yet. I wouldnt worry about bears on that trail. It gets up high pretty quickly. I found myself wathcing for sheep instead of bears.
Have fun.

Thanks for clarifying. I was thinking about random camping permission.

Not sure, but would likely involve a firearms suspension. Not worth it.

Well ... now that the legalities have been outlined for you, I thought
I'd chime in with a 'common sense' source for you.

The "Bow Valley WildSmart" program is an excellent source on how
to 'live smart' with wildlife.

Here's the link to their home page; http://wildsmart.ca/index.htm
You can search their site for all the info, tips, and ideas you need.

Good Hiking,
TF

Thanks but I am very bear smart, just like carrying a gun with me while in the bush, thats all. Taken bear courses, etc etc. Had a few close encounters over the years. Just was not sure about the whole "carrying a firearm in a park" deal. Now I know.

I'm bear smart and try my best to avoid them.

But what I tell myself to make me sleep better. When i'm lying in my one-man tent which probably looks like a soft taco to a griz, is "the drive here was much more dangerous".

Use common sense , carry bear spray but read signage . If there's bear warning signs done enter that area. Even if you had a gun that should be your last option unless hunting them. Not the brightest option in passing thru bear warning area's.

Also, note that it is important to be the fastest runner in your group.

yeah I know all that, I'm not clueless when it comes to bears, original question was asking if I could take a gun into a park. Got my answer. I had my encounters, had to use spray once etc etc. Its all good.

The last laugh is on you ^ guys. The best bet would be to slowly drop and do nothing.
The bear will go after the ones who run

We were just trying to help out and provide a little additional information,
both for you and anyone else reading this thread.

You're new here, so we'll cut you a little slack.

Default bear bangers

I carry a bear banger (pengun which accurately launches an exploding black powder charge) when travelling through bear habitat. I don't know if they are legal in a Nat. or Prov. park.

Used the banger once -firing two shots- and the young grizzly ran off. Don't know if it would work on an older wiser bear...

I actually have the pen style launcher, tried it one day just to see how it worked, pretty big bang.

Pen flares and bangers are legal to carry - just be carefull about shooting them in dry conditions. I know of them starting forest and grass fires after they hit the bear! Then you get to fight the fire while wondering if the bear has realy vacated the site?

Something else to think about when firing bear bangers is that if you fire too far and it goes off behind the bear, hes ginna come running towards you!

I should know, and can look it up myself, but...

If your random camping in the forestry reserve, what are the legalities of having a rifle close at hand for protection?

Default hiking with restricted firearms - handgun

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone has ran into any issues with CO's while hiking in alberta carring a handgun or if anyone even does this? I know its against the law, but I don't like packing a long gun on some of those long hikes.

The only style of firearm you can pack in a national park is a AR style.

All others are illegal to possess in or out of a park.
