Default First Black Bear

My First Black Bear
Just returned home from my first bear hunt in northern Alberta and it was amazing. Seen 69 bears in six days. We took home seven bears between nine of us and there was three colored bears out of the seven. The bear I got was 6"4. The biggest bear shot at our camp was 6"7.
Spring bear hunting has now become a new ritual for me!

I did not eat the meat but one of the guys has had bear meat before and said it was very good i think fall bear meat would be a bit better.

From what I've been told, spring bear meat is better than fall because it's leaner. Just what I've been told. Kinda makes sense tho.

I have tried spring bear in the past. Took the hams off of the back end from several different bears cured, and smoked them with Hickory. They are very similar to pork. Found the younger bears to be the best. The older bears tend to be stringy, courser grained meat. Definitely nothing wrong with the meat. I bet that you would think it was pork if you didn' know it was bear.
