Default Big Bad Wolf

Had this e-mailed to me today. Sorry no story other than it was from the Drayton Valley area.

saw that wolf in person when i was at trophy book archery a few weeks back

he shot it over a bear bait with a 30-06.....took a quick weight and it came in over 230 lbs

shot near edson

i guess the bugger managed to come in and chase off a 6'+ blackie

all on video too

i heard all that first hand from the shooter and couple of his buddies....never did get to see the video but i saw the wolf...its no joke

Holy Hell!! That is one big friggin' wolf! Any word if the shooter is going to do a full mount or what? I'd love to see pics of that.

Default Official weigh-in

Did he get it weighed officially anywhere? If it is 230 lbs. it would be about 55 lbs. heavier than the current world record for a wolf.

not officially weighed....that was a rough weight...not sure now how they weighed the wolf but i remember it was a pretty primitive method LOL

ill be into trophy book again soon....ill follow up then and see if there is any fresh info

while everyone was gawking at the wolf i heard the words "World Record" said about ten times

we'll see i guess

Thanks, I look forward to hearing more.

The current record is ~179 lbs and it was from the Rockies, just got corrected by a friend.

Something about the Drayton Valley/ Edson area produces big wolves. Saw some pics last year of one that probably would have went ~140lbs, but this one's in a class all its own...

a wolf that size could put a significant dent in the moose (and caribou) population.
thanks for posting

Not sure where the 179 lbs for a world record comes from, the book only shows skull size, which of course nly reflects the scull not the size of the rest the wolf.
There was a 205 lb wolf shot behind the buffalo jump in southern alta10 years ago, officially weighed on certified scales.
I'll try and find the story as it was inthe Fort Mcleod papers at the time.

I'll have to ask him. It's kind of conflicting. I found 175lbs in Alaska on a few internet sites, In Wild Furbearer Management and Conservation in North America it lists 176lbs, but that from sometime before 1944. There doesn't seem to be any one widespread standard for wolves.

I did not make the kill but had been watching the area and got many trail cam pics from a couple months before. Of course I had to work the day it got harvested at one of our Bear baits. I am a Monster Mix pro-staffer so we hunt together all the time. Go to WWW.grimsmonstermix.com for the compleat story and more pics.

ya sorry 2 those who tuned in at 7:30, there waz an error made by the network and it aired at 8:30 in the Hunting Chronicles regular time slot. So I apoligize to those who might have tuned in then saw it was Hunting Canada & Beyond and did not see it at 8:30 when it did air. It is quik but thats how it goes when hunting sometimes. A full mount is being done of the Wolf.

Thanx for the heads up....caught it an hour later when Cody Robbins turned into the Hunting Chronicles

Pretty quick sequence......was it really weighed in at 197lbs!!!

That is huge.....kinda too bad it didn't hit the bait for a couple of minutes....woulda been 200 for sure

What a melon on it.....maybe one day I'll find one like that!!!!
