Default Don't you hate it when

work gets in the way of hunting? I had a premier elk hunt planned with some buddies right at the peak of the rut. Two of the guys are new to bowhunting, and spent a ton of money to get ready for this trip. Wouldn't you know it, my schedule gets shifted around due to laying off one of my cross shift guys. Now, I head to work 3 days before I was supposed to go on my trip. I MIGHT be able to sneak in a few days of the pre rut, and MIGHT get a couple more in before rifle season opens up.

This is like the 3rd year in a row that this has happened to me. last year, I got 4 partial days to hunt, and the year before was about 6 days, but not all in one trip.

It's great to be making money, but what good is it if I can't spend it all on hunting?

Well it's not the time to quite a job IMO, but man an employer that does not hounor the workers plans and commitments? Sometimes an employer needs to step away from the table instead of the worker always stepping up to the plate. I would certainly have a resume out and about. Decent companies call it work/life family balance and think it's good

I know how much you've been looking forward to this hunt from speaking with you a few months ago! This bites the green one....

I refuse to let work get in the way of hunting or family things....

I got a court notice once and they said I had to attend (as a witness)
I explained to them the cost involved in returning me from the hunting trip I was going on......they cancelled my attendance.

My little way of "sticking it to the Man"

Happened to me last year. I put in for antlered moose for 6 years before i got my tag, in the Brazeau dam area. FINALLY i got the draw. Told my boss back in the summer that i wanted time off at this time , i specifically told him when, and that i was looking forward to this hunt for years. He said no problem since i gave him lots of notice. Well, the time came and i informed him about taking the next couple weeks off, i was told "since you didnt actually write in a formal request, that i was obligated to work".
So since i was in the wrong, technically, i worked, but there was alot of stuff broke up in that 2 weeks.
So i wrote a formal request for november so that i could go deer hunting, then he said i couldnt have that because "we are short guys and you may have to even work your days off". I told him that in my field, he needed me more than i needed him. I took november off anyways, and i was welcomed back when season was over.
But that was the main reason why i started somewheres else after christmas, but the economy took care of that, I still stand by my decisions.
You have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything, within reason.

I agree with most of the stuff you guys are saying about work not coming first. But I am looking at the long term here. Pay my dues, do a good job, and soon, hopefully get that position in the office. This would mean no more going away for work for weeks at a time. I could sleep in my own bed every night, join a hockey team in the winter, softball in the summer, hell, just to have some friends. Pretty much everything most guys take for granted about working in town, has been a dream of mine for years.

With the economy the way it is, I can't quit, and I am very well established with this company. I also can't just quit this job and work for $10/hr in town somewhere.

But if you haven't seen the "Opening day Elk" thread yet.....it's proof that I only need a couple hours to hunt anyways.

I just like to complain 'bout stuff.

I think it's because most employers don't realize how much goes into planning a hunt and especially 'drawing' a tag. They think it's like a golf game or something, - no big deal if you miss a game because you had to work - and they don't realize that it might be a hunt that you've put in draws for for years and years.

Take it from someone who's put work ahead of hunting for the past 30+ years, only to have health issues affect my hunting opportunities when I've finally been able to semi-retire - DON"T PUT IT OFF!

MAKE time for hunting, because you'll never 'find' it!

I feel for you, I have a bit of the same problem,
every year early Fall is the worst time of the year for me in my job.

Short of finding another job there ain't much I can do about it.

Got some days arranged to go hunting. Sept 13-17.

Maybe it's just not meant to be this year. My ex wife decides to take me to court. This week is screwed now.
Got one more chance to go 2nd week of October.

Default Happened to me

It happened to me this year...I had several days booked off for 6 months then a couple people go on medical leave and my holidays get cancelled. Now I am fighting to get one of the days off so I can still scavenge a chace at an elk. Hopefully we can find them early and often

I will let you know next week

From tendonitis in the elbows from all the scrubbing, invert in places I did not know I had, staying up for days when relief does not show up, racking collars, and banking dollars....to the office job?

I am with cccan. This desk does pay the bills, and I DO have more time... but I definately do not have the satisfaction of a field day's work.

Hoochie, glad to hear you are working, be happier to see pics of your hunt. Good luck

Maybe next year my first plan will be to fake my own death.

If there are a few guys with this problem, we might get a discount on a " bus crash"

Just thinkng outside the box.

I guess I'm lucky then, it is sure nice to have a boss that hunts, they understand alot more. Not to mention working extra in the summer for the saps that go camping. Ha, they don't know what they're missing. Works good for me though, leaving in exactly 2 weeks for 7 days. Sure makes a guy bitter though when plans get scrapped after months of planning.

Default That sucks

I feel for you. I am in the enviable position of having our General manager as my hunting partner so I do not have the concerns you do. Unfortunately due to the type of work you do you are hung so to speak. Hopefully you do manage to get out some this season and manage to put some meat in the freezer...............

Hey Hoochie, mebbe ya should see if the judge hunts, then if he does lay it on him about how the ex has completely ruined all your hunting plans with the court thing. Might get ya somethin'.
