Default Pleasurecraft boating licence

Although I got my Pleasurecraft Boat Card years ago a friend and I were discussing if you needed one for renting a boat. We have the Saskatoon Sport and Liesure show on this weekend and I am a volunteer so I took a walk to the boating licence booth and asked the guy. He says ' Yes everyone needs it to operate a boat '. OK so I passed the Department of Transport booth and asked the fellow there the same question. No you do not. Just a ' dock side oriantation'. So I asked about the difference in price for the licence. 60.00 at the show and as low as 34.00 on the net. He said the Federal gov athourized private companies to do the test. They can charge whatever they want and THEY KEEP 100% OF THE FEE. The feds get nothing. So we have the federal gov making it mandatory to get a licence, a private ' joes marine test ' giving the test, correcting and checking the test and collecting whatever they want to charge for the test and then THEY issue the card themselves-- not the feds or DOT. Another kicker is if you loose the card. You have to go back to the guy you took the test from and have THEM re-issue the card , again not the feds or DOT. Good luck finding him in five years. WOW, would we all like a job testing for a mandatory card, charging what we want and correcting our own bank acount- sorry test. I wounder how many they fail ????

If you go on line and check out BoaterExam.com they have an add on page 40 of the Outdoor Edge magazine. I think it is 49.00 plus a 10.00 discount if you are a Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation member. There may be discounts for the Alberta clubs also. There are lots more on line tests for less money than the show prices.

The joke part of it is how the F will they reinforce it? My family has places on mara lake and once this last whole summer was someone asking to see the license`s on the water (we just put the licensed driver in the seat till they where gone) Second, you do it online, who the F is not going to cheat. Biggest joke ever.

Your right. We phoned ALL the enforcement agencies. SERM ( our wildlife officers ) and they said they CAN give a ticket if there is a problem like an accident or drinking in the boat but it's federal and they don't enforce it. The RCMP said they can enforce it but they only have 16 vessels ( boats ) in the province so how many of those are on the water. The DOT said they don't enforce it because of no manpower in the field so to speak. So unless you have an accident with the boat or your dumb enough to drink beers in the boat there is no one to enforce or check.

I'm in the same boat(no pun intended) and I think this is friggin' stupid!! What type of break neck speed can I possibly do with my 24lb. minnkota on a 17 ft. canoe? With out the electric motor no licence is required as well.
