Get your seat for the Annual Mulhurst Bay Dock Scramble!

In about 2-3 weeks, a wonderful example of human competition that rivals the olympics will occur in Mulhust Bay as many local and non-locals jockey for position for their docks along the beach to south of the big boat launch.

These days, folks don't wait until all the ice is out... just enough for a for dock. Always good fun to see who get theirs in first. Even better to watch who pulls it out once the Ice shifts ands blows east... as it did last year (ruining a couple docks and hoists). Last year in that 500 meter stretch i counted 97 docks and 120 boats. Crazy. 4 years ago it was quarter of that.

I hear there are plans for a marina in the next couple of years... but for now I will make sure i get a good seat for the annual Mulhurst Dock Scramble at Pigeon with a couple chairs... and a beer or two. Good times. Who's with me?

Whats the average cost to build a dock? I've heard like 15k if you want the newer style floating type but I'm talking about your average wooden dock.

Cost varies on the material... general rule of thumb for aluminum frame docks are about at least $100/ft.

But you can build one for much cheaper. The big cost are those stands... (stanchions i think they are called). They should be metal...

Last year there were ads from Environment / Fisheries and Oceans Canada basically outlining that you needed permission of the onshore title holder for a permit for a dock, and stating a limit of one dock / lift per lot, with the front lot owner having to give permission for another user of the available dockage room. In other words, the back lot boys will be out of luck. I do not know how Mulhurst beach will be addressed, or how the titles to the frontage are held there.

This does not seem to be enforced yet, but I expect the well heeled front lot owners will soon learn about this and use it to eliminate the "eyesore" in front of their place.

All the same, the problem at Pigeon is that DFO spends money only at the coast, and is behind the times in approving / building marinas on Pigeon. With a shallow lake like Pigeon, they need to dredge a marina for the public with a canal like at Slave. With upward of 200 boats out on a weekend, there is ample demand.

Problem at Mulhurst is that there is a county road between the onshore landowner and the beach. It is county land... and anyone can set up a dock. you are right that they need permits.. i only saw one last year.

Too bad 98% of lakeshore owners on Pigeon have no sense of any shoreline conservation. I wish a plague of July Iceburghs on those on those docks.
