WMU 408 Trophy sheep ** RAM DOWN**
Originally I was a bit reluctant to ask to many details from hunters who have held this tag in the past.
However after talking with our very own Rackmastr and a couple other guys who have hunted this tag, the help and information I have been given has been overwhelming.
I'm looking to talk with anybody who has drawn the 408 sheep tag in the past few years or who has been on any hunts. Anything that your willing to share would be greatly appreciated.
I'm so excited about this hunt!!!! I'm still vibrating from the 14th...
thanks,
TK

I know a guy that took the ski lift up the mountain for about $20.
He spent 10 days up there and shot a 179 7/8 ram.

Please tell me I am not going to have to share a goose field in -35 weather with 2 guys who tell me OVER and OVER again how great thier sheep hunts were this year.....
Good luck guys. With life the way it is, I decided not to pull that 410 tag this year.

Yes you most certainly will be listening to that!!
Then again, I 'may' be hunting elk till the 20th of December if Kim is really picky with her bull tag!! Goose season may be only a couple short and cold mornings!

Yup, a calm day last year saw gusts only hitting 70kph. The top of Mt. Allen in a 200kph wind is one of the most miserable places on earth. Been there. Done that. Got the Helly Hansen...

That is crazy windy. Forget the rocks in the pockets, I guess I still have time to put the 18 pounds I've lost back on. Regardless looking forward to this hunt TK.

I remember one particular miserable day, that started out ever so nice down in the foothills. Up there I found myself trying to flatten myself behind a little 12" high ridge just to get out of the wind; glassing the elk herd was all but impossible because of the gale force winds, I could not stabilize the binoculars. Later the wind had sucked so much heat out of me that I could not get my extremities to warm up. I made a not so glorious retreat that day, and have never been happier to leave the alpine.

Congrats and good luck on your tag Tango! The wind is unreal. Most important piece of equipment is good ski goggles. You almost never take them off. Blowing snow and ice pellets are annoying and when the wind really gets up and starts blowing rocks around they are really handy. Practice lots on windy days with your bow. Shoot small vanes on your arrows. Make friends with the other guys that draw the tag because if you work against each other you might all lose. It's a great opportunity!

Have you talked with any others that have the tag?
I can't wait to here the stories. One thing I thought of is to put lithium batteries in your camera. ALkalines in cold weather do not work. I have a few trophies that I don't have field pics of because the camera was sitting in a cold truck or pack and I had no battery power. Take a lot of pictures of the sheep you see and the mountains. Especially take a ton of the ram you are going to kill.
Good luck.

i run the little canon's sd780 and sd1400 now with the little lith batteries and when cold out i just keep the camera in a pant leg or inside chest pocket or i run neck lanyards on them instead of wrist...so no matter what i can get it against the body where warm, spare battery is also tucked up against me somewhere too...those cameras are so small and the batteries that its no prob, haven't had to do the battery switch yet when the camera is up against me, do ziplock on it to keep sweat out if under coat somewhere, seems to be okay in pant leg pocket regarding moisture...

oh, and if you shoot drop away rest might want to consider fob's....look em up, they have zip all for wind push than vanes, they work on different priniple and its crazy how much less wind drift they have....i'm too in love with bisquit so i can't try them but if i was a drop away guy i might be a fob guy too

One issue that I know a couple guys had with Fob's in extreme type bowhunts was guys losing them in their quiver or in a backpack. Something to consider.
I know they fly really well and have had great results, but for me its a scary though to have some 'slip off' while hiking. Easy to replace though which is a bonus.
TK, I think you went with Fusions or Blazers for your new arrows....will be a great choice!

yeah i'm a blazer guy, had Jim weigh them over the phone for me when he tried to talk me into fusions this year...8 grains each for the fusions and lil ole 6 grains for the blazers....no reason to switch from blazers yet and a hunt like 408 i'd probably prefer the bisquit with blazers over a drop away and fobs anyhow....even if the fobs have near 70% less wind drift than vanes....i might be off on that percentage but probably not much...it was amazing how much less wind drift those things have....if you shoot a drop away i would at least buy a pack of them to play with as i believe they have money back guarantee and 70%(or whatever the actual was...go to website) less wind drift could be a monster advantage on that mountain!!! even in early season its a windy sob, hiked it couple times a season now and only a dead of summer scout mission did i find it rather nice in terms of wind etc.

Someone forgot to mention that piece of equipment when I went with him on Grey cup Sunday. I have never experienced wind like that in my life. Despite only seeing one non-legal sheep, and the riders losing, It was an awesome day,

I've had great luck in talking to several guys who have hunted this tag in the past!! There are some VERY good sheep hunters out there!! Thanks for all the help.
Also I was VERY fortunate 2 years ago to help Shooter with his 408 hunt, so I have some ideas about the hunting area.
I have been shooting my bow nearly every day, and have been experimenting a little bit with different vanes on my arrows. Unfortunately I am having some clerance issues with the 2" Blazers. Apperantly the Fusion vanes are a little lower in profile so hopefully that fixes the problem.
Here is a target shot at 40 Yards, trying 2" Blazers ( see the knock burried in the center target) 4" Quickspins on the bottom and 4" Duravanes on top.
I have 24 Victory V-Force V1 arrows with 2" Fusions on order. I have high hopes for them.
I think the Rams are in trouble!!

good shooting....did you say 'clearance issues'....um, drop away? the bisquit is calling your name for that hunt! lol
me and a buddy got another buddy into bowhunting a couple years ago and i try and impose my ideas of gear (strictly hunting) on the new guy and he tries to impose his ideas of gear (long time 3d & hunting guy) so its non-stop banter regarding the bisquit and things like anchor sights or even peeps with strings....of course he hates bisquits and peeps with strings so my buddies bow is always wearing something new depending on who he hangs out with for a spell and its funny....so there is a bisquit on buddies new bow and the hater picked it up and ripped two an inch apart at 60 yrds right in the heart of the glendel full rut and he's easily an inch longer draw than the new guy....needless to say he's at least admitting there might be something of interest in the simplicity of that bisquit for a hunting rest, he's too worried about any of his 3d pals to see him near one...i just told him to not show them his 'hunting bow'...problem solved....he's having issue with a drop away right now and i keep drilling him....bisquit, get bullet holes in few arrows and be effin done with it already
keep fighting it though....its a fun game lol

Tango don't let Stinky get to you. If you want to know how that whisker biscuit he's pushing would work just try putting little parachutes on your arrows before you shoot them At least the wind up there might cover all the noise those biscuits make which would be important as the velocity loss gives the sheep an extra couple seconds to jump the string.

Fellers, there is a time and a place for a Bizzket.
NEVER on a bow though!!
I have been shooting a QAD Ultra Pro drop away for some years now, and wont be changing it any time soon. The contact that I have noticed is a touch of plactic transfer from the blazer vanes onto the bottom of the Flipper. Having said that, arrow flight is still good and broadheads seem to tune well...
