Couldn't agree more.

Something for some to ponder I'm sure.

It's definitely the core of the problem. We are our own worst enemies. We fail to see how others see us, and worse, we do little to correct it.

I agree excellent article it is to bad people can't simply decern between hunters and morons who love to kill. What do you do when the morons always refer to themselves as "hunters"

First off remember you cant fix stupid.
But besides the obvious if you have any sort of connection to the moron , simply explain it to him, and baring the lights coming on (not much hope) at least tell him to keep his gob shut.
Unfortunatly the people who are most vocal and vulgar, seem to be of limited reasoning ability.
It's hard to explain to someone you may be close to that their approach is counter productive. They often do not take the critique or criticism in a constructive measure.
None the less we should at least let them know that we do not appreciate their candar and perhaps if they cant say anything nice, then STFU.

Excellent article - thanks for posting.

One thing that we can do to help our cause in the face of non-hunters, is to demand that media are accurate in discerning between 'hunting' and poaching.

Every time our local papers carry an article about an 'illegal hunter' or a 'hunter' charged with shooting an animal out of season, I'm quick to point out to them that they aren't talking about 'hunters' - they're talking about POACHERS. So please - identify them as 'poachers' in their articles.

I point that a rapist isn't an 'illegal lover', and a shoplifter isn't an 'illegal shopper' and a speeder isn't an 'illegal driver' - so why call a poacher an 'illegal hunter'?

If you know the person or not name calling is no help Educate dont discriminate the guy behind the counter should of let his feelings known.

Thumper, EXCELLENT! If the opportunity presents itself, may I paraphrase you? God I love LOGIC!!

Dick284 said, "You can't fix stupid." Dick, next to your can 'o worms pic, that is priceless! The only truer words ever spoken are, "Curiosity killed the cat!".

Thanks for the insights guys!

Oh don't be so harsh. Depends on how you define "love to kill" and "hunter". What about going out and popping a few dozen gophers and leaving them lying rotting? Or spending thousands on gear to bag a few yotes and their $50 pelts? Or to put a head on a wall? Sure, farmers benefit from a few of those activities, but that's not why most of us do it. We simply enjoy it, though we seem loath to admit it. I don't do any of the above things, but I'm not sure I'm any different at all from those that do. I've spent a lot more on upland guns, dog, and gear than I will ever recover in partridge, pheasant, or duck meat. No subsistence involved at all. I could go stomp around the wilds tracking animals with a camera, but I don't. We enjoy shooting them. I'm not an anthropologist, so won't try to say why. But its an enjoyment most others don't understand or share.

Well I was thinking of this thread last night as we sat around a fire after the Turkey dinner. My hosts, whom I have know for many years own a recreational farm (200+ acres) on a river in some of the best deer country i have ever seen. And from day 1 it was clear that they don't want the land hunted. Kinda sad but it's their property and I have never pushed the issue. Their new neighbor however has a different idea. Seems he likes to get real drunk and come pound on their door a night time, barge in and demand that he and his buddies from Red Deer get to hunt this land. Indeed he apparantly terrified my friends 60 year old mother and her friend one night using this tactic. So far he has pulled this manouver twice(hammered both times) and both times they have politley refued to let him hunt the farm. I told them they need to call the cops if he's driving drunk for starters and I am putting them in touch with the boys up in Sundre. It is becuase of *******s like this that they posted the land in the first place!

I agree that as hunters we need to portray ourselves in a better light and appreciate the many privileges that we have.

This reminds me of the time on of my (ex)friends asked me if I wanted to poach some cow moose with him and his buddies. Made me mad as hell. I advised him in no uncertain terms that if I ever got wind of him poaching I would report him myself. As you can probably guess, that was the end of the friendship.

Although, equally annoying are the people who say things like "how can you kill a defenceless animal" as they are munching away on their hamburger or sawing at their t-bone steak.

Those type of people make me just as mad as the disrespectful hunters that ruin it for the rest of us. They have the nerve to sit there eating there meat and enjoy it and think that cows and chickens and such just magically turn into a breast or a steak onto their plate. Now if you were to show them a slaughter house i think they would be singing a different tune about hunters. I honestly think that hunting is way more humane then a slaughter house. First off the animals we hunt have a chance to survive, they have awesome senses for a reason, to avoid predators and to have a chance at life. Cows however from the time they are conceived they are already dead cause they have no chance of escaping us; the predators. They only want to see the end product and just turn a blind eye to the way it got on their plate.
