I had a new shotgun and a new "bale blind" to try out and since open crop fields are a rarity here in Fort Nelson I figured ...road trip. I made a tour down to Alta to do a little shotgunning with dick284 last week. We had three days and got in two morning and two evening shoots. Lots of birds in the area and we stayed over at dicks inlaws and I gotta say.... I ate well The blind was a success, but if you get get one I would recommend setting up up in the day light..for the first time. That first morning..in the dark..with daylight fast approaching... was..interesting.
We had some exciting moments, like when I dumped one right over the blind and had to do the left..no right..no left step to avoid being bean balled by a falling canada. Or the one we called "skidplate", he came down so hard and fast he scrapped his breast feathers off.
Good company, good food, new friends, thats what makes a hunting trip a success for me. Thanks for a really good hunt dick, we gotta do it again next year.

Thanks for posting Ruger.
Morning one was fun with the kerfuffle surrounding blind construction, all topped off with a banded and neck collered snow goose, (cell called in)
That evening saw sme 21 birds hit the ground (11 geese and 10 ducks) one being that pintail I'm haming it up with.
The last night was "skidplate's" night only 5 geese all together, but the ones that committed to the blocks(except ol "skid") decoyed great.
Had a blast buddy, and for sure it's already being planned for next year.
Missed a few pics bud:
That's Rugersingle on the last night in the blind. (the black thing by his head is the pull handle for the top cover "holy crap handle")
One of the truely un sung things a fellow can take in when he's out in the field.
Way to go Dick and Ruger.....looks like a great time...
hmmmm....everytime there's a post about someone being up in Dick's home territory there is always a comment about the food.....I am starting to note a trend
I hear ya bud!! There absolutely nothing better than hunting with good friends and GREAT food!!! .....the fact that every time someone is up in your neck of the woods and they comment on the food....suggests to me that the food probably ain't "good"......its probably "top notch"....
My Heart Soars!! Looks like more birds coming down!
I was worried that we have seen the majority of the migration, but judging from your pics, and guessing you are in the GP area, looks like good times are still to come for the Edmonton area.
By the way, get that banded bird mounted. It's simply too cool.
The only banded bird we got was dicks snow. It will be very interesting to find out it's history. The only other one I have was from a mallard east of Saskatoon in about 1975. It was banded in Mexico and was a three year old bird when taken.
The food is always "top notch", thats a very good way of putting it. Between the food I ate and the birds in the cooler I think I lowered my gas mileage on the way home !
And those birds are all about 3 hours from Edmonton. On my tour I made it as far as saskatoon and the amount of birds there, west of the city, are incredible. The amount of water in the Perdue area is what I remember as a kid and thats 30 years ago !! Coming back home the GP area was pretty bare compared to when I passed by two weeks previous on my way down. Course I went north of the city, might have missed a bunch to the south.

Well on this particular trip I had very little to do with the food, that honor goes to my Mother-in-Law. Good Romainian stock if your wondering, coupled with heavy Ukranian overtones. She got mad when we had breakfast in Vegreville on the first moring. That set the tone, every night about 6 ish my cell would ring and and she'd ask when we would be home. Supper was warm and awesome every night we were there.
Thanks Mom.
