River breaking up

I was down on the NSR earlier this week fishing around the mouth of a feeder stream. There was a lot of water running out of the feeder but there was also a lot of ice still in there.

As I was fishing I suddenly noticed that the feeder was getting a lot louder so I wandered over to check it out and lo and behold something upstream must have broken loose and it took all the remaining ice out of the feeder. The water around where I was fishing raised about 9" for around 45 minutes while the main pile flowed out of the feeder and then slowly receded. Wish I would have had a better camera or better yet a video camera for this one!

cool pics geez. i've had a lot of good days from where you're standing. miss that part of the country and that stained river. post more pics when you start smackin those big eyes. thanks.

How long ago was it that you were up in this hood fishing this spot?

I ask because pretty much all the older guys I've talked to about the spot said that it got quite shallow compared to what it used to be, and a lot of people seem to have kinda given up on it. Everybody mentions the walleye there - even the fish cops, but I've only ever caught one there, and the rest of the time it's pretty much all pike.

Except for today when we caught a couple smallish burbs.

most old fellas i know are very wise. especially old timers that are fisherman. they just might be feeding you a line. shallow compared to what it used to be? a major tributary dumps in there. people don't like guys going down there, but they can't stop you. after all that ice flows though and the water is still high in the trib, be there and you'll catch eyes. i know you're on here lots and i've shared my favorite river tactics many times. use big shiners and stingers.

I know exactly what you're saying, and with it being a fairly small area, I don't announce it either. Stumbled on it last year and there were a few folks that I saw down there fairly regularly, but thankfully it's still a pretty quiet spot most days - and I like that As for the old fellas - a couple of them I definitely trust, and I know that they don't go down there, so I dunno...

Today all the ice has cleared out and the water is way high, but the current is strong enough coming out of the trib that I couldn't get a 4oz weight to stay put and ended up in the main river pretty much whatever I tried, and for some reason I didn't have any other weights with me. I'm busy for most of the week but might try to get out there once or twice after work to see how things progress.

That looks like the mouth of the sturgeon? Last time up it was to skinny to even get my river boat up into it....

I wanna fish it back up in st.Albert area so bad the waters just high enough to flood right over the cattails !! I wish it would open earlier

The mouth really has filled in over the last ten years, it used to be much better. That being said, large walleye are still taken from there. Geezle, try upstream (on the NS) about 150 yards.

If that is the sturgen then I have noticed in the past five six years that it gets real shallow and weedy in the summer but after the pike spawn for a few days there are some huge pike in that little river. Any one know when the pike will start to spawn?

I loved working downtown the last 8 weeks watching the breakup. There was loads of ice moving really fast.Not sure if any got hung up down stream in city limits.
